1) I have a 9 month old, male, Blue front amazon called Harley
2)I did a lot of research and they seemed really funny and fun, as well as good company. I looked into many species including the greys and a shulper crested.
3)He sits on my shoulder and gives me cuddles (although this is not normal for amazons normaly i don't think!!) And he talks really well
4) He is trouble, he trys his luck every single day!! and has left many scars on my fingers, from his mood swings.
5)He can be a bit nippy some times but he can normally be didstracted
6)My best memory was when i first got him and we would sit cuddling for hours all evening!!
7)I spent about £1500.00 pound when i got him. (he was £625.00) i got him a big cage (£300.00 and something!!) and a big parrot tower (£200.00) a wingabago (which i got from america (£150.00) and loads of toys. He costs about £5.00 a week roughly as i buy him fresh fruit and veg, the disinfectant etc and a new toy every 4/5 weeks (basicly he's spolit!!!)
I am with him for about 30mins in the morning and then from 3.30 to 9.00 in the evening (Please note my mum is at home when i'm not so although hes in his cage hes not left alone for hours on end) He also has the radio on
9)His cage has taken up loads of room!!! as well as his tower. and i also don't want to go out as much becuase i enjoy his company too much!!
10)No regrets except maybe his determination, because if he wants to do something he trys his very best to do it!!!!
I wouldn't change him for the world or any amount of money he's my baby!!! |

1. senegal - 8 months, male; lutino-pearl cockatiel, 2 years female; 3 budgies, 1 blue/white(male), 3 years, 1 blue/white (male), 2 years, 1 yellow/blue 1 year (female)
2. I had budgies as a child and loooove birds, so my boyfriend bought me a budgie 2 years ago. Then I finished school and knew I would be really busy with work and couldn't get a high maintenance bird, always liked and wanted a cockatiel so I bought Lily. Coney, the budgie, was a rescue bird who I took in and The Goose (budgie) I saw at a pet store while just browsing. I had never seen a pure yellow budgie. She looked so cute like a little chick, so she joined the flock. Then after Christmas this year, I changed jobs where I no longer work all the time, had haerd wonderful thigns about senegals. I had origianlly wanted to buy one directly from a breeder but saw a baby in a local pet store and fell in love with him.
... the rest to come

3. I love the fact that they are social and interactive; and that they let me fluff their feathers.
4. Pooping on me
5. Coney the budgie has feet problems, as a result of having gangrene (he previous owner didn't take very good care of him).
6. I love coming home every night. I can hear the flock of birds screaming for me as soon as I open the front door.
7. Budgies were inexpensive - 25$ each
Cockatiel was 120$
Senegal was 850$
All in Canadian dollars
Food/toys are about 100 a month
Set up is expensive. Tilda the senegal's cage was 500$.
Fresh fruit/veggies about $50 a month but I eat them too.
8. 2-3 hours a day of direct interaction with the birds out of their cages. Probably more on weekends or days off.
9. I have to come home directly after work every night to feed and play with the birds. If I go away on vacation I must make special arrangements for them - a pet sitter can get expensive. I have a dedicated room in my house for them that I can't use for other things. Sometimes I sacrifice buying other things to treat them instead - but its a pleasure.
10. No I love them to death. Its a labour of love. |

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
Mollybird is a lovely white 6-year-old cockatiel
2) What made you chose this species?
I fell in love with my aunt's cockatiel when i was seven years old. I am about to graduate from college and nothing has changed! Cockatiels just have a warm place in my heart.
3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
Molly loves to be involved with everything I am doing - she is so inquisitive and will even follow me around the house from room to room. I also love how cuddly and loving she is. Whenever I leave she tells me to "be right back" and it melts my heart.
4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
fluff and poo all over EVERYTHING all the time. seriously, I have never met a bird as fluffy and powdery as Molly, it's crazy. Half the time when I leave the house I have fluff sticking to me and won't notice for several hours.
5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
not really - she is extremely noisy for a cockatiel, but its (mostly) endearing
6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
oh goodness its hard to pick one - I had hip-surgery a year ago and the whole time I was stuck in bed Molly never left my side. She was my little gaurdian angel birdie.
7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
Aside from vet visits, molly is not particularly expensive to keep. I spend most $ on her fresh veggies.
8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
Most of the day - I am lucky and I hope when I graduate I will be able to find a job that won't keep me away from her!
9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
Traveling plans are always tough because I always hate leaving her. Also, I feel like a worried mom all the time heh
10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
definitely not!!! |

| This could take a while..!!! |
|
|
1) Age and sexes of birds:
Sonny, Greenwing Macaw, 4 years, male
Diesel, Harlequin Macaw, 23 months, male
Stella and Duvel, Hahns Macaws, 2 years, sex unknown at present
Rebel, Nipa and Bandit, GC X MB Conures, 16 months, sexes unknown at present
Pluto, Alexandrine, 4 years, male
2)What made me choose..??
Sonny, well I have had a thing about GW`s ever since we had one at the petstore I work in, they are my biggest love in the whole world. Sonny was in a bad way when I first met him, esp. emotionally, I HAD to buy him, the rest as they say, is history.
Diesel, have also always loved the Harleys. A pal (I love this woman dearly for this) found out Diesel was for sale and offered to lend me the money to buy him..!!! He needs alot of work due to his previous owner being a moron, lol.
Stella and Duvel, ok well I actually handreared these two in the first place and they were sold together as a pair. The guy was no longer able to keep them a few months ago and I asked if I would have them back, which I did glady, they are adorable.
Rebel, Nippa and Bandit, were all handreared by my friend, Rebel and Bandit were supposed to be sold and the new owner never came for them, Nippa was sold and then returned. They looked like fun so I had them all.
Pluto, always loved Alexandrines so when the chance to buy him came up I leapt at it..!!!
3)Best thing about my bird..??
Oh hellfire, where should I start..??
Sonny is my soulmate, we were meant to be I feel, I couldnt love him more if I tried. I love Diesel for the way he has learned to accept me and for his cheerful outlook on life, he has changed and adpated so well since I brought him home, his intelligence is remarkable. Stella and Duvel are the cheekiest pair you could ever meet, with a super cute "hellooooooo" to boot..!!
Rebel, Nippa and Bandit are very independant and are always doing their own thing. Bandit is the most snuggly of the three.
Pluto I adore for his chilled out perspective on life, he is soooo laid back, even whe the hahns pick on him he just moves outta the way, also he is not tame but knows when to go to bed and will step onto a perch for me.
4) Hmmmm difficult thing about owning these birds..??
Well with the big Macaws it`s keeping them occupied, they need lots to do and the expense of toys and food etc is high..!!
With the Hahns Macaws the biggest problem is noise, they could wake the dead on occasion..!!! They can get horrendous at times.
The Conures, hmmm well keeping them out of mischief is interesting lol.
Pluto really never gives me a seconds bother..!!!
I guess the main problem is the mess, with 8 I find they produce alot of it..!!
5)Behavioral probs..??
Well all of my birds are preowned so this is an intersting one. Sonny and Diesel were both bought by people who should never have owned them. Sonny is still fearful on occasion and is very much a Mummys boy, tho is improving greatly these days. Diesel hates to be cuddled and up til recently had a habit of using his beak ie: biting to control the situations around him, he is no longer doing this as he has realised it doesnt work (I got bitten many many times while teaching him that it didnt bother me, ouch..!!!)
The Hahns are very noisy..!!!!
No probs with the Conures.
Pluto does this weird head weaving thing but again he is improving lots.
6) I have way too many special moments to share..!!! too many birds to list them all here lol.
But when you suddenly realise that you have gained the trust of a previously sad bird that has to be one of the most special things for me.
7) Roflmao at this question..!!!! How much does it cost..?? Oh my life, ummm I dont think I want to add it all up, I`d probably faint..!!!
i have eight parrots, two of which are large Macaws, I think I`ll leave you guys to work it out..!!!
Time in a day hmmm well about an hour before work in the morning and approx. 5-6 hours in the evening most days. Sometimes less, sometimes a little more, timetable owing.
9) Going away can be hard, tho I have a fantastic pal who sees to them for me so the actual going away is not a problem but I miss them badly so am very rarely away for more than 4-5 days at a time.
I work full time so I dont get the social life that I used to have as I now have to make sure I spend time with the parrots. And I very rarely can afford things that I want as all of my spare money goes on the birds, but hey, if they are happy so am I.
10) No regrets about my large Macaws, Im a Macaw person, lol. I`d have even more if space allowed (one day soon hehehe). The big Macaws always have and always will hold my heart, esp those Greeniwings..!!
Sometimes the noise that the Hahns produce gets me down but they are incredibly cute easy going birds so I guess that makes up for it..!!
The Conures are fantastic fun and are really easy to keep BUT I wouldnt have more birds that size, I adore mine but will never have more as I much prefer large parrots.
No regrets on Pluto, he`s a darling..!!! |

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
- Dewey: conure, ~6 years old, not sure about sex
- Sugar: budgie, ??2-3 years old, female (though for a long time we didn't know this-- she was young and has a very light sere)
- Kiwi: budgie, ??3-4 years old, male
2) What made you chose this species?
- we had had a budgie before and loved him very much. we joined a local bird rescue group and Sugar and Lila (who has since passed away) were not getting adopted... we couldn't help but take them home and care for them!!
However, because of their past and because we had 2 of them they did not become very tame (though our other budgie, Mucha, was very tame and a great friend!!!) so we decided to get a bird of another species who was our friend. But, we wanted a bird who was small enough that our landlord wouldn't mind --- and very importantly, small enough to not be a big risk to our budgies. So, we looked into conures and parrotlettes. When we saw Dewey's ad in petfinder (which has listings of animals from humane societies around the country), we decided he sounded like a good match about us.
3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
Dewey is very loving, and Sugar and Kiwi are super adorable.
4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
They are very needy and want to come out all the time. This is hard when we have to go to work and school... we make sure to let them out at least several hours a day, but I know they really want more. Sugar and Kiwi are together, but I worry about Dewey alone all day.
5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
Dewey screetches a lot and bites holes in our clothing, curtains, etc.
The budgies don't really have what I would call behavioral problems.
6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
When we first got Lila (who passed away last year), she was terrified and would not move unless she was covered and the room was dark, even to eat. She would shake if we entered the room. Once we brought Sugar home and her quarintine was over we brought the two cages together and let them out one at a time to meet between the bars of the other bird's cage. The change in Lila was amazing. She became a totally different bird.
Even though I wasn't directly involved in this, it was really heart warming to see these two become good friends, when each had obviously had a really hard life before.
However, since this is supposed to help people get to know about parrot breeds, let me say that our Mucha, who passed away several years ago, was also a budgie. He was extremely friendly and interacted with us a lot. It would be hard to have such a good friend as Mucha.
7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
The adoption fee for the budgies was only $5 a piece .. :/ which I am afraid rather does them a disservice, but with the price being under $19 at petstores for a "new" one I guess it makes sense. Dewey's adoption fee was $100 (but if we had adopted a conure at the same bird society as the budgies, I think it would've been a $30 fee).
Even though we buy Harrison's pellets and nice seed mixes, the three of them together probably don't go through more then $10 of bird food a month (plus fresh foods, little bits of the same things we eat).
The vet bills are probably our highest expense. For one reason or another one of them ends up at the vet every several months. This is usually $35 per visit (but I think our vet is exceptionally low...our vet near Chicago cost a lot more).
8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
At least a couple of hours. If I am home all day, they are out most of the time, and Dewey usually stays with me.
9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
Lots of little things, like getting rid of teflon coated pans and the forman grill. But probably the biggest thing is spending time with them, especially Dewey (and in the past, Mucha). It is sometimes really nice to have a little friend around. But even if it is not nice...even if he is making annoying, repetitive noises and "guarding" my mouse or keyboard or eating away at my shirt while I am trying to do homework, he's always there! I guess it's like having a 2-year-old child...for the next 30+ years of our life!
10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
We were warned that conures could be loud and noisy. It is certainly true. If we lived in an apartment this could probably be a big problem. As it is, Dewey can be pretty annoying.
Also, his droppings are big and wet and make a big mess, even though he is a small bird.
But he is a nice little guy
I don't have any regrets about the budgies at all. The are adorable, fantastic little pets. I regret that they aren't more fond of us, but as I said, I think this has more to do with their background and the fact that we have 2 of them than their breed. |

I forgot to add, I totally agree with everyone who said that this has a big impact on travel plans. I don't really want to travel anywhere now except my parents' house, because we can take them with. Well, I shouldn't say I don't *want* to travel, but I don't feel there is anywhere I can leave them and feel confident they are safe and getting the attention they are used to.
Also, I used to think we may live in another country for a few years, but now I don't feel we can do that... even if it is permissible to bring birds to the other country, I don't think it would be fair (or safe) to make them undergo a long quarantine or risk the laws changing such that we could not bring them back with us! |

Pico a sennie. 18months and male.
Chose sennie because of size, more independant and not too noisy. Also a good first bird and I was not very confident of large beakey ones!
I like his cheekness and hanging upside down. A parrot is a real companion and openly admit my child substitute. Great company as they are so intelligent and responsive. I enjoy the responsibility of my feathered friend.
Most difficult is his moodiness, especially at the moment, see sennie forum! He also hates my son and my sister!
Behaviour as above, he is also phobic about stepping up on anything other than a sweater.
Fondest memory was the first time he came to me when out of his cage and walked through my spaghetti bolognase like he owned the place! Also realising that he was talking, I had to tune in to it as it is not always clear what he is saying, but he asks 'is it bedtime?' and 'night night' when he gets to his cage. He also shouts at the dog when she barks.
Very cheap to run due to size and does not destroy his toys. He was £350 and cage £199.
He is out for three hours during the week and longer at weekends and school holidays (I teach)
Not the species really, I love him to bits, but I bought him at six months old and I think he may have been a bit traumatised at some point. I would buy a younger bird and be sure to be able to handle him. It has taken some time to get him out of biting and have worked hard with him but he is showing a really moody side at present so a bit dissapointed as he seems to have regressed for no apparent reason, other than possibly hormonal. Sennies are great lively birds and a joy when he is being good. |

1]. Oskar--African Grey--6 yrs old.
Sonnie--Sun Conure--about seven months old I'm guessing...
Qwill--Cockatiel--10 months?
Aiden--White Capped Pionus--6.5 weeks
2]. Oskar--I didn't know that I wanted one until I had the oppurtunity...but after I did extensive research I knew that it would be perfect...
Sonnie--I saw pictures of them on the internet, and did some very extensive research....I loved the description the sites gave me...
Qwill--I had one when I was VERY young, and my mom wanted me to get another one someday...so I got him for my 16th birthday...
Aiden--I originally went to the 'hand-feeders' to see a little Jenday conure, but I changed my mind when I saw this little one...I knew I had quite a while...so, I started doing research...and everything I saw was perfect...
3].Oskar--his intelligence...while, sometimes it may not be such a good thing, lol, I love when he talks and learns his new tricks and stuff...it just makes me smile every time...
Sonnie--his loving ways...he just loves to snuggle with me... although he dislikes everyone else [[due to abuse when he was younger...not his species]] he absolutely loves me.
Qwill--his personality--he's perfect around kids, and other pets...he can fly so he often just flies away if he gets too croweded, but other than that, he's just such a wonderful little bird...
Aiden-- I don't know his personality yet, but I know that he likes to be held, if you're holding him, he never wants you to put him down.
4]. Oskar--he tends to hold major grudges [[as most Grey's do]] if I accidentally scratch him in the wrong way...he's mad at me for a couple of days...he tends to bite me during these little temper tantrums too.
Sonnie--his anti-social ways...he's such a beautiful bird, that I don't like having to cover him when company's over...but he hates strangers, so he just screams alot...typically when there's company, it's my young nieces, so they don't really handle the loud noise very well...
Qwill--if he doesn't like something I do, he just flies away....I tried to have his wings clipped once, but they didn't do a very good job...he could still fly perfectly the day we took him to get clipped....
Aiden--again...I don't know him too well yet, so I don't have any down-sides to him...[[yet...haha]]
5].Oskar--just the biting thing a little bit...
Sonnie--OH YEAH! but again, that was due to pretty bad abuse when he was very young...so I think he'll get over it soon enough...I'm just not going to rush him.
Qwill--other than being a lil bit of a biter when I was first taming him...nope
Aiden--no...not yet anyways
6].Oskar--I think the day he started coming out and letting me just love on him...it was just an amazing day for me...
Sonnie--a few days after I got him, he came out of his cage and sat on my shoulder and started rubbing his beak on my face...I was so happy...
Qwill--the day I tamed him enough to have him out....he was my first bird that I tamed alone, so I was ecstatic.... it made me feel so good...
Aiden--probably the day I first saw him...I held him, and just a feeling of love and joy came over me....I can't wait to have him home.
7]. oh not much.... for any of them...just food, fruit, and new toys every once and a while....[[well, after the cost of the bird and cage]]
8].oh a long time for all of them....not because they NEED it, but because I WANT to....there's nothing more fun for me than just snuggling up with my birds and watching movies...they even sit on the treadmill when I exercise! lol
9]. it hasn't really...other than I now have something productive to do with my time...
10]. Absolutely NOT.... while we have our bad moments, I would NEVER regret anything about these birds, they've become my life...

1 ) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
Ilo is a creamino Peachfaced Lovebird, likely female, and Teshi is an olive orange-faced Peachfaced Lovebird, possibly female (pelvic bone test), but generally unknown. They are both nine weeks old.
2 ) What made you choose this species?
Several things: Their sillyness, playfullness, overall personalities and spunk, everything I've read about them, other people's birds, and their beauty. I also had to take into consideration size and noise level of whatever bird I decided to get, as I live in a townhouse.
3 ) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
There's too much! Well, I love how they each have their own very distinct personalities, and differences. And I love how they adore spending time with me, being close to me, and cuddling--it's a battle to put them to bed at night, or just putting them in their cage at all!
4 ) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
Hmm... I guess for me personally, it would be that I am very well knowledged and used to the behaviour/communication methods/pack workings of dogs and cats--especially dogs--and have a lot to learn about bird behaviour and communication, and how to interact with them in the most appropriate way.
5 ) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
Not yet, fingers crossed. ;P
6 ) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
My birds and I haven't been together all that long yet, but bringing them home from the breeder's was a highlight... They were resting in a box on my lap, both my hands draped inside around them. They slept on my hands the whole way home, resting their beaks on my pinky finger.
7 ) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
The initial cost of everything was expensive, but they are fairly cheap to maintain. Good quality pellets last quite a while, and I buy them some seeds as well, which is fairly inexpensive as well; the most expensive stuff would be the fresh, organic veggies and fruits that I (try to!) feed them. And toys, although I make some of my own.
8 ) How much time do yo uspend with your bird on average?
At least a few hours per day, depending on if I'm working, or what's going on. Lately I've been pretty busy with our move and work, so not as much as I would like, but some days I have them out for the majority of the day. It really depends.
9 ) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
Lots of little things: more supervision on my part, around them and if my other pets (dog and cat) are around, sticking to a structured bed-time and wake-up-time schedule, lots of other little things like that, as well as getting rid of anything toxic to birds (teflon pans, candles, incense, etc...).
10 ) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
Mmm, no, not really. |

Hi all, here's a fun little questionnaire that is also meant to provide those looking to get a new bird with some general information about some of the different species of parrots so that they can make a more informed decision after reading about our experiences with our fids. Hope you enjoy it
1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
2) What made you chose this species?
3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
I can add Ziggy my new grey now!
1/ African Grey, 10 weeks old and male.
2/ Had never really considered a Grey as I was not keen on their eyes and the ones I had seen just seemed to sit there! Until I met an adorable baby grey, I started researching and when I found out how amazing they were I made my decision. I didn't want an Amazon or other noisyer bird, my aunt has one and he is SOOO loud!
3/He is very very tame and very well socialised and I love the way he gets so excited about things and the lovely little noises he makes.
4/Managing two birds and giving them equal time I guess. Although Pico is not as demanding as my new baby. Accepting the huge responsibility in a way but then again I love that too now my baby has flown the nest. Openly admit they are my child substitutes and fill that gap.
5/Not a thing so far and am endeavouring to continue with socialisation etc to ensure that he does not become fearful.
6/He has started to experiment with new sounds and realising that he was squeeking because he wanted to be with me and not because he was hungry.
7/ Cage and bird toys etc around a scary £1000. However I don't spend much on me apart from basics so figured as some might spend that a year on holidays and going out etc, it is what gives me my pleasure.
8/Around 3-4 hours a day and at least an hour each one to one. Weekends and school holidays most of the day.
9/ Trying to juggle the furniture to accomodate both cages and basically the downstairs turning rapidly into a bird room! I am happy at home so don't go out much apart from work so it hasn't stopped me doing anything.
10/ None whatsoever he is adorable and looking forward to his development. |

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
Berto is a male cockatiel around 8 months.
2) What made you chose this species?
I went to the bird shop and they consulted with me and told me that for a first bird a cockatiel is great.
3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
Everything. He's pretty and smart and sweet and adjusts really easy to new things.
4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
Probably remembering to change his papers. It sounds bad, but I forget a lot.
5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
When I first got him he screamed and bit a lot, and now he does this feet picking thing (see An Interesting Diagnosis in the cockatiel forum) to get my attention since when he actually was sick I'd pick him up whenever he did that.
6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
Ack! This is hard. Probably the first time he let me scratch his head, I felt so bonded to him after that.
7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
Berto cost around $85, plus his cage was like $20, plus toys. But we spent under $200 for startup costs. On food we spend about $10 for his Harrison's pellets every month. We've spent a lot of money in vet bills lately since he was sick though.
8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
Berto is spoiled rotten, but I spend about 10 minutes in the morning and then a few hours at night. On weekends he's basically out all day.
9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
In tons of ways, I have to wake up earlier to feed him and I have to be quiet around 8 when he goes to sleep. And then on Sundays I clean his cage, so I can't do anything until noon besides clean Berto's cage.
10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
No regrets at all, Berto is perfect. [/i] |
