I wouldn't worry about it Gemma, I have good holidays as I teach and I have found that I actually tend to give my birds less real quality time when I am home all day. They are out for longer but we all tend to just do our own thing all day. Pico was driving me nuts today as he screeched every time I went out the room and I know he doesn't do this when I go to work. I was really busy today as I am having new windows fitted and had to have a major clear up and although they were out for longer I felt guilty as I didn't spend as long with them as I would when I come home from work. I also try not to make the routine too different either so that when back at work it is not a big shock!

Hi,
I chose male blue fronted amazon.
He is about 18 months old and ive had him since a baby, I chose freddy because i thought he was cuddly and friendly and pretty. Freddy used to be more cuddly than he is now but still likes a sritch. I think its funny when he uses his foot and slowly tickless his neck!

I would maybe go for a too now as the noise and attention is not a problem and i would maybe like a more cuddly bird, freddy was hand reared but very independant and amuses himself alot of the time.(which i think is Good!!!)

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
I have a Peach-Faced lovebird named Tiki, who's around a year old (she's recently sexually matured) and is a female.

2) What made you chose this species?
I chose this species because my previous bird, a cockatiel, came from an abusive home and was extremely unfriendly and wasn't hand-tamed at all (He was happy though, even though he was ornery). When he died, I felt bad that he was never hand-tamed and wanted a bird that would bond to me. Lovebirds are notorious, plus they're the right size for my home.

3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
Tiki is extremely entertaining - whether she's singing like nuts, attacking her bell, or perching on top of a tunnel that she could go in instead, or listening to me tell her how pretty she is, she's always fun to watch.

4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
Lovebirds are notoriously nippy, and indeed if you catch Tiki in a bad mood she can give one heck of a bite. I do not recommend female lovebirds (males are apparently sweeter, although I don't know) for little kids.

5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
Well, yes, until recently she was Ms. Attack Bird, even though she still loved me. She would climb up and bite my neck - HARD. But recently I had a proffesional show me how to handle her properly, and she's been much better since.

6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
Once my mom and I went up to a cottage int he White Mountains. We brought along Tiki and my two bunnies, who run around on the screen porch for the duration of the vacation. After we got settled in, we went up the road for a bit to visit my aunt. We must've come back half an hour later, and somehow Tiki had escaped. But instead of flying out the door (which she could've because it took us a minute to notice) she ran after me and climbed up on my foot. I can always remember looking down and seeing her face, looking up at me and looking very proud of her houdini act.

7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
Well, I already had the 'tiel cage, and I don't know how much that costs. But lovebirds are pretty inexpensive - they eat many different kinds of food, so you don't need to look for a certain brand. They are relatively hardy and do ell in most temperatures, so they don't need to go to the vet much. And you can make toys at home, too.

8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
Well, now that she isn't trying to rip out my vocal chords, I take out Tiki much more. Usually multiple times a day, although usually only once on school nights.

9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
Tiki has fit well into our home, but maybe one change is cleaning ym sheets of birdwaste and buying toys and food.

10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
Hm... well, in choosing my pet , Tiki, no regrets at all. She couldn't be any better for me. Maybe, if I went back before I knew Tiki, I would try a less nippy species of bird... maybe a parakeet.[b]

Very Happy 1) senegal female age 3 1/2 SweetPepper
Cockatiel male age 14yrs Maxi
cinnamon cockatiel female age 1 1/2 Kacey

2) I did research on senegals and wanted one, was at a bird fair and saw her. She chose me and it was love at first site.
Cockatiels were chosen as a step up from having 3 parakeets.

3) My sennie is areal sweetheart, very playful and loves to cuddle.
Tiels are a small easy bird to care for.

4) Cockatiels are velcro birds, they love to stick to you. Can't do anything without them.
Senegals need larger cages to house them, lots of toys for when they are destroyed.

5) Maxi tiel is grumpy and cantankerous in his older age. Very nippy.
Kacey tiel is very klutzy and breaks tail and wing feathers. I worry about her.
Pepper my sennie just loves to throw her food out of her dish and onto the floor. A bit of a messy girl.

6) When my tiel Digger died last year, Pepper my sennie came up to me and snuggled tightly under my chin and cooed softly. She knew I was upset over loosing Digger. She was a great comfort to me.

7) My sennie and her cage was expensive but otherwise not costly.
Tiels are less expensive to care for. Bought Maxi from vet for $25, found Digger outside ( he was an escapee), Kacey was given to us after Digger died.

Cool Since I am home all the time, I spend a lot of time with my birds. I do try to get them to have playtime in their cages. They are so used to having people around constantly.

9) Birdy proofing the house for their safty. Watching what you eat so your bird can share your food even if you don't want to. Keeping all doors closed for bird safety.

10) Only the tiels as they are very clingy. But did get first tiel when still young at bird ownership. Would have done better at raising him if knew a lot more about bird ownership. I know a whole lot more now. Have owned birds now for total of about 20yrs.
I did a lot of reasearch on a bigger bird and decided on a senegal. I was happy with my choice of bird.

I have said here that i would maybe have gone for a too now, and i do think that sometimes, but i dont really.
I think that i like the idea of a more cuddly bird but the reality would have been too much. I would have defo done things differently like socialised him more with lots of new people and maybe harness trained him as a baby.

Or, if I had already done that, I'd see my avian vet long before all the problems started!

I always wondered about that... I mean, I've always heard that the Leadbeater's don't make the best pets out of the Cockatoos. I've even seen one in a bird store who was about a year old and returned cause he was not handleable. Another bird store had one with a warning sign by it that it will bite! I noticed how Zazu will let you snuggle with him... you must have gotten a good one Very Happy You say he plucks, but in all his pictures, he looks great! Does he only do it in a little inconspicuous spot?
Is he pretty independent, or does he need a lot of touching? If he doesn't need a lot of touching, then in what ways is he an handful? I've never talked to another Leadbeater's owner. Wink

Sue ive kinda wondered what made you go for MM2, they have a reputation as not good pets? But i think it's the way you treat the animal as to how friendly he is. You cant see Zazu plucks Smile Surprised

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
Cheekie Kon-Tiki
Senegal Parrot
16 yrs
Unknown

Petrie
Fiery-shouldered conure
5 yrs
Unknown

Figaro
Budgie
3 yrs
Female

Aloha Coconut
Budgie
8 months
unknown (needs to grow up more Rolling Eyes )

2) What made you chose this species?
Senegal: Pois were said to be affectionate, rather quiet, cute, and playful
Conure: Pyrrhura conures were said to be quiet and clowny and cute. And they were medium sized, which I wanted a bird of this size
Budgies: They are quiet, playful, active and cute. And good beginner birds.

3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
EVERYTHING!! Laughing Even biting and screaming and pooping, its what makes them...them. Even the "bad" things (which I don't think of as bad) makes them who they are, and gives me the full parrot experience.

4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
Behavior. biting and such. But this is challenging and I enjoy working with them.

5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
My sennie was a plucker in his other home. Now he's gotten into the habit. I'm working with him to keep him from plucking his itchy pin feathers.

6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
Every moment is special. But I liked the time I wrapped Petrie in a towel after his bath, it was so calming, and every time Cheekie waddles up to me and says "Woo" in such a kind and gentle way. It means he loves me. When aloha nestles into my pocket or up my sleeve. And when fig flies up to me and kisses me.

7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
A LOT. I need to buy cages, toys, food, treats, vets and so on. I don't really know. Just A LOT. Laughing I keep from spending irrisponsably though. I need money for the vet and I have some saved already.

8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
Multiple times during the day. Usually an average of 2-3 hours. Maybe even 4.

9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
Many ways. I try to fit them into my schedule as much as possiable. I always check if plants are safe and unsafe, toilet lid always closed, no non stick cookware, and many more.

10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
NO. Even the worst screaming biting plucking bird is perfect to me. They are all so special and wonderful in their own ways. Their faults make them perfect and special.

Gemma, That is plenty of time. You wouldn't like if they were so used to having hours and hours of your undivided attention, that they got spoiled and started behavioral problems when you were out too long. That is a good healthy amount of time, and they know they're loved and well taken care of, but know how to independently entertain themselves, which is mentally healthy for the birds. Smile I think you must be a great birdie mom! Very Happy

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?

Indian Ringneck 7 year old male
Indian Ringneck 10 month old (sex unknown as yet)

2) What made you chose this species?

I was 15 at the time and I was immediately attracted to a little green baby in a pet shop. I had to have him. Daddy bought him for me. hehe. From there I grew a passion for IRNs.

3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?

They make me laugh, they cheer me up and never stop amazing me.

4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?

Bluffing and hormones.

5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?

I've been working on stopping Jibbys annoying screaming when he doesnt get what he wants. He is very stubborn!

Yoda is bluffing I believe and is very dominant and aggressive at the moment.

6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.

Cuddling Jibby, after returning from interstate after a year of not being with my Jibby.

Yoda finally being comfortable enough to sit on my lap. We are still working on lil Yoda. Wink

7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?

In Aus,

Well, first of all paying $300 for my Jibby (6 years ago), $150 for Yoda (last year) and aprox $40 - $60 a year for pellets for the both of them. Then there is vegies/fruit every time we do the groceries, cages (aprox $500 - 600), toys (under $100 a year).. add it all up.. a fair amount of money and time spent. But all worth it!! I want more!!

8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?

As much as the sun is up! I study from home. I'm a stay at home mother hen. lol.

9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?

When I was living interstate for a year, I flew home every couple of months just to spend time with my Jibby who was living at my fathers, I made my father drive him over to my mothers as I was staying there when I was home. (Dont worry Jibby gets very excited on car trips, he loves it like a dog likes hanging out the car window!) hehe, I have put the kitchen table in the spare room so I can fit my birds cages in this tiny unit.

10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
Gosh NO... they are my babies! They pulled me through some hard times and I wouldnt trade them for anything.

I have 2 birds , one is a IndianRingNeck and the other is a Quaker
Sunny my Quakers is 11 months old and Jaden my IndianRingNeck is 6 months old
Ihave 2 friends that have Quakers and they kept telling me they are awsome birds, as for Jaden I just kept seeing her at the pet store and I read up on IRN's , she is so beautiful I couldn't resist

what I like best about Sunny is she is lovable and friendly and real out going, what I love most about Jaden is she is more quiet then Sunny lol be she friendly not as out goingbut she loves attention

The most diffult thing about owning a bird is cleaning up the mess, lol I have 2 and they can make a pretty good mess

Behavioural problems? not with Sunny but with Jaden yes, she use to lunge and bite when we first got her, but now she is over that, she just needed some time to adjust

one of my fondest memories is Sunny playing peek a boo with me this morning under my blanket, she was having great fun, she is a comical little birdie
as for Jaden it has to be the day she stopped her lunging attacks on me,I don't miss them

with 2 birds I would say I spend 50 a month for seeds, treats, fruits then maybe anoyther 10 for fresh veggies, pellets cost me 30 for 10lbs , but 10lbs last me well over a month, toys I spend to much on lol so I would say an easy 50 to 100 a month

I spend as much time as I can with my 2, I work afternoons so every morning around 10am until I get ready for work and thats about 2pm, on my days off from 10am until 8pm their bedtime unless I have to leave for an hour or so to run errands, they are out of their cages and on the playgym 80 percent of the time , they hate being locked up to long

I have quit smoking, threw out the teflon and the air freshners,I'am very careful what products I use around them, I always think of my 2 first and cater to their needs

Noooooooooooo Regrets I love my 2 little girls wouldn't trade them for anything Smile
