| Fun Questionnaire about your fids |
|
|
Hi all, here's a fun little questionnaire that is also meant to provide those looking to get a new bird with some general information about some of the different species of parrots so that they can make a more informed decision after reading about our experiences with our fids. Hope you enjoy it
1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
2) What made you chose this species?
3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why? |

I've got a galah sulfur crested hybrid, he's about 10 months old.
I didn't really choose him, he chose me, I was going to get a eclectus, I also liked the alexandrians but they didn't have any. I'd always wanted a too but was concerned about the noise and feather plucking, they're high maintenence birds but I fell in love with him and he really took a liking to me too.
I love that he is so affectionate, he's a real teady bear and he says and does some funny things, he's my baby.
The hardest part is making time for him, he's very social and his cage is really only for sleeping and his own safety when I'm out, I call it his bedroom. He pouts if I don't spend enough time with him.
He's pretty good as far as behaviour goes, I've never really had any problems since I've spent a lot of time socialising him, he doesn't bite and only screams when he sees other birds.
Picasso gives lots of kisses and loves visitors, he runs up to greet them, he's a show off too, especially around the girls. I sit down one end of the hall and say "come to mummy" and he runs flat out, wings out a little so he doesn't lose his balance, straight toward me. Just when I think he's going to give me a big hug he does a sharp turn, running straight past me and just keeps going, then he calls me to come get him "come on" he follows me around and "rings" like the telephone if he can't see me, then I hear his great big feet thundering down the hall to find me.
Picasso cost me $1500 AU but they can sell for as much as $5000, it costs me about the same to feed and keep him occupied as a cat or small dog but his vet bills so far have been over $1000 with more to come because he has beak and feather disease, I will be very upset if he doesn't survive and have at least 20+ years of good health, I don't worry so much about his appearance (even though he's an expensive hybrid and appearance is why people buy them, he's about 10x the price of his parents because of this) I bought him because I bonded to him in the shop and he has the most calm friendly disposition, being unusual was great too.
I spend most of the day every day with him, I miss him when I'm out.
I can't stay out too long or go away for the weekend without making arrangements for him in advance, I don't travel as much as I used to either, and Picasso gets the decision as to who I date too, he's really good at picking up on peoples personalities and lets me know if he thinks their not right for me. I'm limited as to where I can live too because of the noise and space needed.
I don't think I would get another too, unless I wasn't working or worked from home, also beak and feather is getting more common especially amongst toos so I would want to be sure it was healthy, some shops won't even stock certain types because they are too much at risk, had I known before I would not have got a too, having said that though if Picasso lives happy and healthy for the nexy 40 years I would not have regretted any of it. |

| Lovebirds |
|
|
1) I have one dutch blue male lovebird who is a year and a half, and a pied female lovebird the same age.
2) I found them to be so beautiful and so sweet, they were a gift from my boyfriend.
3) I like that they are not totally dependant on me or needy birds, but also enjoy sitting on my shoulder as I do everyday stuff, like the laundry or washing the dishes. They are very mischievous and make me laugh everyday.
4) They are very fussy with their diet. They love to bully my African Grey and pick fights with him, so I have to constantly supervise them when they're out of their cage. I've also learned that they are more difficult to train because they are a pair.
5) Yes! They like to bite until they draw blood
6) My favourite memories are of when they were babies, every morning I used to wake up early and get them from their cage and bring them to bed with me, and they would fall asleep in my hand or on my chest, and so we would sleep in together for an extra half hour before I had to get up to go to school.
7) They were $149 CAN each, their cage was $150, food and toys upon purchase was $100. They are not expensive to keep at all, as they are not destructive birds and don't really destroy their toys. They are just as happy shredding a phone book as they would be playing with an expensive toy from the pet store.
8 ) They are out of their cage for about 5-6 hours a day on weekdays, and usually all day on weekends. Most of that time they're busy flying around and playing, or bullying my Grey and stealing his food. They usually come to me or my boyfriend when they're tired, and they nap on us. Again this is because they're a pair and much more content playing with each other, a single lovebird would require more one on one time with their human companion.
9) I've had to put full spectrum lights in because they are indoors all the time. I've had to give up all my non-stick cookware and harsh cleaning agents. I used to travel a lot, and since getting them I have not been on vacation. I worry a lot more, as a mother does for her children. I have to do a lot more vacuuming because they love to throw around their food.
10) I don't regret getting my lovebirds, they are an absolute joy to live with and I love them dearly. |

| Congo African Grey |
|
|
1) I think he`s a male, though never had DNA sexing done, Congo African Grey who is 10 months old.
2) I did a lot of research on the species and was blown away by their intelligence and their beauty, so I decided he would be a perfect bird for me to match my intelligence and beauty just kidding about the last part!
3) He is the sweetest bird ever and the best thing that ever happened to me! He is so sensitive to my emotions and can tell when I`m upset or crying, and he`ll be extra sweet to me on those days. He is very smart and talkative and loves to chatter up a storm. He is not a needy bird and enjoys playing with his toys just as much as he enjoys playing with me. Aside from talking and pleasant vocalizations typical of African Greys such as clicking and whistling, he is a very quiet bird and never screams (except when he`s visiting the vet )
4) The most difficult thing about having him is being very aware and in tune with his emotions. He is an extremely sensitive bird and I worry a lot that the smallest thing could cause him to start plucking. He is also a one person type bird and hates everyone except me (though this may not be the case for all african greys). I find it very difficult taking him to new places and socializing him to new people.
5) He used to chew off his tail feathers when we first got him, but we were able to stop that behaviour. He went through a nippy stage as well, which was also corrected.
6) When we first got him he was very stand-offish and shy. He did not want to be handled or come down from his cage. African Greys need 2-4 weeks to adjust to their new environment and their new companions before they can begin trusting, so we gave him his space, even though we felt a bit rejected by him. Three weeks later, I was sitting on the floor one day and doing school work, when Bunny all of a sudden climbed down from his cage on his own and walked over to me and quietly started playing with my highlighters. I knew then that it was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
7) He cost $1600 CAD. His cage was $600. Toys, food, and books on African Greys upon purchasing him were $200. He is a lot more expensive to keep than my lovebirds, he loves wooden toys and loves destroying them, and also can lose interest in a toy pretty quickly, so I`m always replacing his toys with new ones. I probably spend at least $60 a month on toys and perches. His pellets cost $60 a month. A single visit to the vet cost just over $400.
8 ) He`s out of his cage 5-6 hours a day on weekdays and 10-12 hours a day on weekends, but one on one playing time with me I would say is 1-2 hours a day. He`s not a cuddly type bird that likes to be held like a cockatoo would for example.
9) At night my boyfrind and I watch TV with head phones on, so that the birds can get their 12 hours of sleep uninterrupted. Once the birds are put to bed, we act like we have sleeping babies in the house and we even talk in whispers The rest of the changes are the same as with the lovebirds.
10) Not one single regret. |

1) Senegal parrot, 6 years, male
Leadbeaters cockatoo, 5 years, male
Lovebird, 1 year, male
2) - I didn't really choose for Iago. I thought he looked funny with the down on his butt.
- I adored those cockatoos, and especially the leadbeaters!
- Those lovebirds are so cute & small. I had only room for one small birdy..
3) - Iago always amazes me with his intelligence!
- Zazu is always there to comfort me..
- Flit is so active, and great to look at.. He surprises me with his curiosity!
4) Zazu plucks, and is phobic.. That's hard!
5) Yes, Zazu is phobic & plucks
6) - Iago said 'hi' as I came into the room, and raised his foot. He knocked me off my socks!
- Well, when I was sad, Zazu tried to dry my tears.. That was so cute. He didn't try to be a pain then!
- Flit: Well, so many! He jumped into a b&g macaw's tail one day. Holding on. The b&g macaw screamed, and tried to get the little bugger off..
But Flit held on to his tail, and screamed too!
7) Well, do I have to count in the cage etc as well?
8 ) Depends on it.. Sometimes all day, sometimes an hour, sometimes somewhere in between.
Zazu takes most of my time..
9) Well, my house looks like a birdplayground LOL! Food everywhere, toys everywhere, fridge full of birdystuff, etc!
I also choose non-toxic stuff to clean etc.
10) With Iago & Flit: No.. Iago goes beyond my expectation. He is such a good boy!
With Zazu, it's not that I don't like him, ofcourse! But if I could have done it again, I would not have choosen a cockatoo like him..
Or, if I had already done that, I'd see my avian vet long before all the problems started! |

One CAG,about 6 months old,male i think.
One cockatiel, about 1 year old, female.
One love bird about 6 months old, male i think.
I picked these birds, cause i've allways liked them.
I like every thing about my birds.I think that we have all bonded and they are like my kids.
What is hard about having birds? It is a lot of work.I dont even bother putting my vacume away, cause i'm allways vacuming up seed, feathers.Have to clean cages once a week.Certain things that you just cant do,when you have birds. It's very hard to get away for a few days.Sleeping in(for get it in my house) You have to make sure that they are getting every thing that they need(toys, food, time)
It can get spendy.I have found a new place to get bird toys(dollar store) pet dept, have'nt found a toy they dont like.
Some times it's hard to find the time to spend with your birds but you have too.We just moved and let me tell you,we have been busy, busy but i have set a few hours a side just for the birds a day.In my eyes you have too. It's like some people that get a dog and they tie it up in the back yard and only see the poor thing when they feed it.( A BIG NO,NO) Birds love their time with their people.
How has my life changed, sence having birds? I feel complete. |

I have a Yellow Nape Amazon. Approx age 26, female.
I didn't choose her, a friend wanted to place her with someone she felt she could trust and give her attention and of course time. I did A LOT of research on parrots and different species to see which was right for me. I was ready for a parrot. My choice was an African Grey due to their intelligence, sensitivety. They're a challenge and I feel a challenge is stimulating, therefore, never boring. But my Amazon is just the same and we have become very attached in just our 2 months together.
What I like best about Chaquita........everything I could not ask for a better connection between us in our short time together. And you can see it in her personallity that she is greatful chokes me up.
The only behavioral problem, which really isn't a problem. I've had her a very short time and she is molting. She started becoming a little bit nippy but just when she tries to nip, I distract her with my other hand and put my one hand against her belly to step-up. I'm also giving her a lot of fun things to play with that she hasn't had and when I have to take her away from what she is playing with (her homemade tree stand) she gets upset but gets over it very quickly. She's learning that she'll get to go back to it.
Special moments? Right now, to me, every moment is special to me
So far there hasn't been much cost. She was given to me with all her accessories. I've just bought her new food and some toys.
I spend about 6 hours a day with her. One on one about 2. But she is out of her cage for about or more with me talking to her all the time. She's older and gets tired more easily so I feel 6 hours is her limit. Plus she was stuck in her cage, let out maybe on a weekly basis, so 6 hours a day is probably like "Whoa!" to her. "I'm tired now".
My life has changed for the better. I suffer from anxiety and depression. Being sad a lot and sleeping a lot. She makes me happy and I have a lot less sad days. I have wanted a parrot for many years but their high pricetag (for the ones I wanted anyway) made it difficult. Greys here are on average $1500 and the same with Amazons. I have 2 children and feel that spending about $2500 for everything would be too selfish for as some people say "Just a bird". To me their not "Just a bird" their your best friend and companion and in some cases, your child for those who can't have children or their children live their own lives.

1. Grey- Samson 5 years old, male
Quaker- Emmie 1 1/2years old, female
Tiels- Spike 6 years old, male
Sammie 5 years old, female
Lovebird- Buzz 2 years old, male
Budgie- Stewie 3 years old, male
2. They all chose me . Samson we bought from a store, he was unwanted...I loved everything I read about greys. I also researched quakers and wanted one badly. The tiels came from my daughter's interest although we did get Spike for free since he was not given any attention from his owner..teen boy. My lovie, well they are so cute and when one was available I jumped on it. Our budgie came with Spike.
3. The seeds and shredded paper on the floor, food stuck on the walls and the furniture chewed up...oh and I love the speckled paint I get on my clothes. Actually I love their lil personalities and their brightness! How they can figure things out and how they just plain love us.
4. I can't get out of town.....no money and no caretakers! Vacations are much more difficult now and when I do go anywhere I worry and miss them...also I am running out of room for furniture.
5. Yes! quakers are very territorial.....greys are one people birds and he does not care when people get close to me! Lovebirds love to nip for whatever reason.
6. The day that Samson who was labled as a vicious bird came to me and offered me his feet and then his head for a scritch! Now when I do give him his daily scritches he holds my finger and won't let go until we are done, the sweetest thing! Emmie, the first time I looked at her and she at me....she ran up my arm and snuggled in my hairline and refused to come out. The tiels, I love how they follow me and call me when I leave the room..but when they waddle after me is the best!
Lovebird, the first time that beak bit down is unforgetable! Then I got the "what did I do?" look. Budgie.....first time he came to his front end of the cage and chirped and chatted with me.
7. My kids will never be able to go to college! Hmmm, the tab does run continually with the food, seeds, pellets, fresh stuff, toys, etc. tons of it!
8. I spend all day with them carrying them from perch to perch inside and out, during the summer when I am not working it is all day everyday, when I go back to school basically the entire time I am home.
9. I don't cook with certain things, candles chemicals are a nono, buy more fresh fruits and veggies, I clean for a hobby now whereas before it was a chore.....
10. not one regret......I just need a bigger house so I can get more birds! Actually I am patiently waiting for my senegal....... |

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
rainbow lorikeet, about 4 months old, sex unknown
2) What made you chose this species?
It chose me. I'd gone to the bird shop to get a cockatiel and there was this incredibly cute baby lorikeet begging us to get it out...
3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
It's too hard to chose what I like best. I love how playful and vocal he is, as well as the how flexible he is around new people and new situations.
4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
Definitely the frequent projectile liquid poop.
5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
Not really, the only thing I can think of is how he used to always try and climb on our heads and would bite hard if stopped, but with a bit of training he has completely stopped doing that
6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
The best memory is probably the first day I got him. He brought me so much joy at a time when I was in deep grief. He made me smile and gave me something to look forward to.
7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
Hmmm, the main expense is his food, he doesn't need new toys all that often because he's not a destructive bird at all. I think to cover the basic dietary requirements would cost about AUD $15-20 per month (I don't know exactly because I just buy as I go).
8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
I spend 1-3 hours (depending on the day) interacting with him out of his cage and anything between 3-8 hours just sitting in the same room with him in his cage and casually "chatting" as I go about doing my work.
9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
I used to only come home to sleep. Now I'm home most of the day if I don't have classes on at uni, and I actually look forward to coming home to play with Pepe.
10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
No regrets, it's worth the effort |

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
Alexandrine, approx nine months old ~ we thinks its a boy but have been surprised before! It can take up to 3 years to tell the correct sex.
2) What made you chose this species?
I love their grace and quiet (handling) nature.
3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
He is so very affectionate towards me, always giving kisses ♥ Likes to be involved in everything I do!
4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
He is nervous of other people when meeting them for the first time, has been known to jump off his stand to come to me, I worry he could hurt himself. Going away is difficult, I can leave the avairy birds with someone to feed & water them. With Lexi I take him with me & if he can't come - I don't go.
5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
No not really.
6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
Lexi now says hello with THE most beautiful voice! ... the first time he said this it made me cry with joy.
7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
We were very fortunate in that Lexi was hand reared especially for us by our dear friends. To buy a handreared Alexandrine would be approx $300 Aud in Australia. I make all his toys as he is forever wanting new things to play with and it works out far cheaper & much more fun ~ he loves to help! Foodwise the cost is minimal, he has fresh fruit and veggies along with the aviary birds, I buy bulk, same with seeds and pellets & Lorikeet mix.
How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
Most of the day, I work from home and am very fortunate that I can. If I am out in the avairy's he comes with me.
9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
I do worry more, that he is happy & not in danger. They (I am told) have the age always of a 2 yr old child! We lost our dear Galah after moving house, my son wandered out with him on his shoulder so he flew and found later killed. I'm probably a little paranoid that Lexi won't meet with a similar fate.
10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
No, no regrets at all ~ I adore him, he's the apple of my eye ♥ |

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
I have a 5 year old female blue and gold macaw, Sophie
2) What made you chose this species?
It wasn't the species, it was the individual bird I fell in love with.
3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
I just love how sweet she is, for a macaw, she just has the most laid back attitude.
4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
Just the size, and the noise volume, cages, toys food, everything is jumbo size and can be pricey. Its not that shes overly loud, it's just that when she is, you know it!
5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
nothing more than acting like a spoiled brat 3 year old human, but it's endearing
6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
I just love when she sleeps on the couch and snuggles with me.
7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
after the intitial setup, you can get away with about $50 to $100/ month for food/toys. you really have to shop around for toys, buy food in bulk, etc.
8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
When I had her at home with me, she was out of her cage at all times when I was home, right now Im in an apartment temporarily, so I keep her at work with me, so she's out of the cage 10 hours per day, interacting with me and different people thoughout the day.
9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
I would say that its similar to having a child, you really have to make room in your life for a bird on an everyday basis.
10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
well, I love my bird, and wouldn't give her up for anything, but with a big bird it can be hard, like I said I had to move into an apartment temporarily, and a big macaw is jus not an apartment bird, luckily, I was able to make arrangements and still keep her, but I know that not everyone would be able to do that. |

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
I now own a female red sided eclectus, she is 17 months old (I did own a galah too but she passed away last month)
2) What made you chose this species?
I saw a pair a few years ago and jokingly told my husband, "I will own one of them one day"
3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
She is so intelligent and just a lovely bird and her colours are beautiful
4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
I can't really think of a problem with her, I have always owned birds, so I am used to them. I guess at times she gets a bit loud.
5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?
not yet
6) Share one of your special moments, or fondest memories of you and your bird.
probably just when she interacts with me verbally and probably when we have a shower and she becomes very loud and vocal with singing and whistleing etc
7) On average, how much money does it cost to have a bird like yours?
she cost heaps to intially buy, plus her cage is pretty big, plus toys (probably around $2000 to get her and her cage and toys). Now probably only $10 a week for food, and about $100 every few months for new toys and stuff
8 ) How much time do you spend with your bird on average?
depends on where we are. A couple of hours a day normally, but if we are out and away from home, then about 12 hours a day.
9) In what ways has your life changed in order to accomodate your bird?
I have had birds all my life, so to me it is normal to own one, I have known nothing else.
10) Do you have any regrets about chosing this species, if yes, why?
no regrets whatsover |

1) What is the species, age, and sex of your bird?
Cosmo: is an albino 'tiel, and he is 3 years old.
Dudette: is a green budgie, and she is 2 years old.
2) What made you chose this species?
it wasn't so much the species, as it was the bird itself. as for 'tiels, they are cuddly and sweet, yet comical, and not too loud. the budgies i love because they are little clowns!
3) What do you like best about your feathered companion?
they are so understanding and are always there for you for better or worse (LOL like marriage!!!)
4) What is the most difficult thing about owning your bird?
not really anything, but they can be quite time-consuming (it isn't hard for me, but it can be for others)
5) Has your bird ever had any behavioural problems?

hi all i have two fids so bear with me...
1.Ruby is an Solomon Island eclectus and Bella is a Blue Indian ringneck, ruby is 58 days old (baby girl.. hehe) and bella is 4 months old. ruby is a girl and im not sure what bella is!
2. i chose ruby because i love everything about the eclectus parrot and i love the colours, personality, indivualaity, sweetness and the size of the ekkie.. i chose the indian ringneck because we wanted a family bird and ringnecks are a joy to have and the blue colour she is!
3.Ruby is so needing of me and she loves to snuggle up underneth my neck, i love the feedings and the cuddles and her uniquiness and bella is so naughty but in a cute way she is so cheeky and gets into everything!
4.time to cook, clean (also clean up there poo's!) up after them.
5.ruby is still a bub and has shown any behaviuoral probs but she does nibble on my fingers! i dont want that to turn into biting.. and bella bites (sometimes).
6.when we got ruby she knew her name and on the whole way home very time we said ruby she squaked! bella is when she learnt to kiss me on command! she opens her lil beak and mwah!
7.for both birds about $100 per month. Ruby cost me $650 and bella was $150 (ruby came with a pratice perch, 7kgs of formula vetafarm, bistcuts, her sleeping bucket)
8. all the time when im at home, there always out of the cage when im there. when im at work they saty in there cages.
9. i have to make sure im at home at 7am and 6pm so i can feed ruby. id take them on holdidays with me! or get a petsitter. i didnt really have enough money for ruby so im struggling while she gets the best but thats ok cause i love her.
