| Green Cheek Parakeet? |
|
|
Is their such a Parakeet? Their is a pet store down the road from me selling them for $300 dollers. To me they look like green cheek conures, I have one and they look just like them. I asked one of the store clerks and she told me they were conures, but another clerk their got somewhat upset and said "THEIR PARAKEETS" I just told her they look like my conure and she walked away. Anyway I just never heard of a green cheek parakeet. Has anyone else? and if so do they look like green cheek conures? |

I'd say that if they look like your green cheek conure, most likely it's a conure. I guess some people just don't know anything about parrots and parakeet even if they do work in a pet store. Then again keep in mind that some do have different name such as the senegal parrots, sometimes they are called the African oranged bellied parrots. So anyway, I'd say that it's safe to say that it's a conure.

It sounds like a Green Cheek Conure to me. I know in America Budgies are commonly known as Parakeets.
It isn't a very good idea calling a Budgie a Parakeet.
There are two types of hookbills
1) Parrots and;
2) Parakeets
Parrots are usually stocky birds with small tails (Lovebirds, Eclectus etc)
Parakeets have more slender bodies with long tails (Budgies, Ringnecks etc) |

Actually, there are three types of hookbills...
Cockatoos, parrots and parakeets... Cockatoos are unique in a way that they are the only birds t hat has a crest that can be raised... |

Oh yeah I forgot about those parrots. I read it somewhere that Cockatoos are unique because of the crest that can be raised... May be it was saying that cockatoos use the crest to show emotions may be? I mean like when they are curious, and excited and threaten and stuff... I read that Hawkheads only fan their nape crest when the feel threaten... hmm who knows... hehe.. Thanks for pointing that out though. Cheers |

Speaking of Hawkheads, they have 3 beautiful maroon colored ones at the bird store I go to, me and my man had such a fun time rubbing their necks by their ears and getting their "crest" to go up, they were so pretty. They are very expensive, I was surprised all three were already sold. |

Bih I think cockatoos are also the only birds that have that bald spot behind their crest
Demeter I know what you mean, they are beautiful birds, and expensive! Over here they're more expensive than the Macaws, they go for about $5000! How much are they there? |

I guess if they are that rare, most people that has the cash to spare to get it in a heart beat when they see them!! I haven't seen one in real life, and I probably won't see one unless I go oversea to somewhere where they do breed them like the US or somewhere!!!
Shirin, Yes those cockatoos do have that little bald spot behind their crest... all except Apollo, he's almost bald.. He has got this one tiny feather all on it's lonesome in that little bald spot!! it's quite cute.. hehe |

Im sure my addicted butt will end up back at the bird store this weekend so I will get some pictures of them, and definately get some with their crests up. Last weekend they had them out in the play room so I wasnt able to get any good pics of them. If I remember correctly they were $2000, didnt come close to the almost $10,000 Hyacinth, but still up there. I'll let you know when I post some pics of those little guys |
