| HELP! Is our conure about to lay an egg? |
|
|
We had assumed that our half-moon/orange-fronted conure, Dewey, was a male because he has a relatively wide orange band on his head. We do not have any other conures (just two budgies).
Tonight my husband noticed that we can feel what may possibly be an egg on his tummy. We rub his tummy fairly frequently and have not noticed anything like this before.
Other possible symptoms:
1. He has been sleeping a lot lately - he keeps going back to his house and going onto his swing.
2. When he is out he keeps being... er... excessively amerous with us, much much more frequently than usual. Other than that he is also even more cuddly than usual.
3. He was last weighed 2-3 weeks ago and was 64 grams. Today he weighs 74 grams.
4. He has started making different noises than we have heard
before. For example, today when he saw walnuts instead of making his usual conure shriek, he made these sort of baby noises. He is clearly still
capable of being loud.
He has not done anything that looks like trying to make a nest... but half-moon conures nest in termite holes.
Do you think "he" might be forming an egg? If so, what should we do? Our avian vet is not reachable tonight or tomorrow (because of Christmas) and we are not sure if he will be in on Friday.
Unfortunately we are planning to take a 5 hour drive in a couple of days (with the birds). Is that dangerous? Usually Dewey's travel cage is a small cage. We put his favorite perches in it and it sits on the car seat.
Thanks in advance...
