| Horror at vet! |
|
|
I had to take Ziggy my grey to the vet a couple of weeks ago (been really busy otherwise would have posted sooner) I came down stairs and to my horror there was blood all over the place. I got Ziggy out and saw he had crushed his open ring round his leg and had attacked a toe until it bled. I took him to my nearest avian vet as I was so worried about him losing his foot. The vet was awful handling Ziggy but was relieved that the problem with his foot was ok. He treated Ziggy and then criticisised the way his wings were clipped and before I realised what he was doing he had clipped one wing even more! I was so stunned I couldn't say anything and paid and left. Next day Ziggy had bitten a toe again and more blood! I wasn't taking him back so phoned where I got him from, I took Ziggy in and they treated his toe with advice from their vet. A complete contrast to how the vet dealt with him. No struggles or trauma, the vet had gauntlets and put a glass over Ziggy's head and held him like a chicken for the pot! Ziggy is so gentle and had never had to bite anyone, he bit me hard for the first time ever when I had to rescue him from a bad fall. He has lost his balance and falls to the ground and I am disgusted. I am waiting for a reply from the owner of the vet. Ziggy hasn't babbled or spoken much since either! |

Oh my GOSH! I'm SO sorry! What an awful experience
I don't know what you mean by gauntlets, but putting the glass over the head - I've never heard of doing that before
Awwww, I sure hope his foot is going to be OK! You know, it's SUCH a good thing that you were home before Ziggy had a chance to do much more damage to himself trying to get that ring off - I've heard such awful stories of what people have come home to find |

OH POOR ZIGGY!!!
it makes me so angry when vets don't have a lick of compassion.....
that vet is most likely doing it for the money.
someone should ring his head right off his neck.
I hope you can find a better vet just in case it happens again!
I'm also sure Ziggy will get over it in time and get back to babbling away.... |

Oh my! I'm sorry to hear that you had such a terrible experience.. And Ziggy too!
I never heard of glass over the head. It sounds like the vet is handling some harmful stuff! |

The gauntlets are thick leather gloves. He did ask if Ziggy was tame and I said very and got him out of his carrier for the vet. He just put on the gloves then and grabbed ziggy, he was so scared and squawking and flapping to escape until he put the glass over his head. I was at a complete loss. I will keep you posted about the reply to my letter of complaint. I have found a better vet he lives some miles away which was why I didn't take Ziggy to him in the first place, I felt it was too much of an emergency to travel far. At least the lovely people from where I got him from will help when they can, they did a good job on his second injury and Lois who owns it helped me compile the letter and will come with me to meet the head vet if necessary. She is disgusted as Ziggy is one of the best Greys she has sold. |

aaw, I'm really sorry Ziggy went through that. Was this a certified avian vet? Or just a regular vet? Regular vets aren't really trained to handle birds, and that's probably why he handled Ziggy the way he did It's good to take your birds for regular vet visits starting from right when you get them, so that you can establish a relationship with a certified avian vet that you trust. This way when there's an emergency such as this, you'll know exactly who to go to. Hope Ziggy feels better |

Haley, what do you mean like a chicken? Do you mean he held him by the neck, withought supporting his body? Because they are supposed to hold the neck, that's how all vets and also biologists do it. But they're towelling the bird and supporting the body at the same time. Do you have an avian vet you like? Mine is really good, if you want I'll give you his number. |

That is horrible I hope Ziggy is ok now If the vet wasnt used to parrots though he may not have thought that what he was doing was wrong I am not taking his side though what he did wasn't very nice

While trying to explain the problem he wouldn't let me finish and arrogantly said 'I trained as an avian vet' almost as soon as I had walked in. He didn't use a towel at all, Ziggy was all over the place wings flapping every where when he first picked him up. So yes apparently is an avian vet, in my letter I questioned how up to date his training is, knowledge of how to treat birds has moved on a lot even in ten years. I know because I bought a book on Greys written some years ago and was horrified at some of what was written, a complete contradiction on what more up to date information states. |

As an avian vet he should know better I hope the vets do something about him as our knowledge of these intelligent and beautiful creatures increases I think vets should have to change thier methods

Wow That really is a shame. You know with regular people doctors, they have to continue to take courses throughout their career to maintain their licence, because as you said medicine is forever changing. I wonder if they do the same with vets? I really hope this doctor is reprimanded somehow. Please let us know what comes of your complaint. |

awww. so sorry to hear that Ziggy had to go through such horrible experience with the vet!! I hope he'll be ok and recover soon from his injuries.
And I hope you get through to the vet's office or whoever you need to talk to about your complaint.. this vet sounds like he needs a konk in the head to set him straight! |

Please please Joti.. Remember that though breeders or knowledgable parrot people are NOT trained avian vets..
This vet may turned out to be a dork.. Please don't loose your faith in all vets just because of this one. |
