Question about talking (well....kind of a gripe)  Reply with quote

Why is it some people are so super concerned with their parrot talking?

I've always wondered this. Sera is 13 months old.....she started saying hello, but has since stopped. We haven't heard anything like this from her for quite a few months. But I could care less if she ever says a word. The fact is, she a wonderful bird and I love her just the way she is. Her endless 'chattering' when she is playing is so sweet and it sounds like laughter.

I"ve just always wondered about that myself.

I totally agree with you.. I don't really care about it either, I'm not one to sit there and try to teach my Grey to talk. If she picks up words here and there, that's great, but if she doesn't want to, it doesn't make her any less special to me. As I was just saying in another thread, she much prefers whistles and sound effects over talking anyway.

I think some people who are really concerened about their parrot talking probably got a parrot for that specific reason Rolling Eyes

Seems like the very first thing people ask when first meeting Manu is "does he talk?" Laughing
Granted, it is cute to hear them talk, but they're SO darn cute anyway, no matter what Razz !

My mom really drives me crazy with this issue! "Cathy, I see birds on TV all the time that carry on conversations! Manu, what's wrong with you, you should be talking!" Confused Confused Finally I just had to tell her that Manu doesn't need to talk - she talks enough for the BOTH of them Confused

Yeah that's true isn't it? Most people find talking an eminent thing. Mad I always get the question 'do they talk' (Like you Cathy!) and if I'm really annoyed I'll just say no.. Laughing

You know, over here there is a parrot store that will allow you to trade your parrot in if it won't talk! Mad Mad And believe me, people use this service.
I once worked with someone who would do this. Mad Mad Mad

I think talking is cute, but how about their own language? Misty used to chatter in her own language which was sooo cute! Heart Heart

Yes, itīs the same here in Sweden. When I tell people that I have parrots their first question always is "do they talk?". Some people here buy a parrot because they think itīs cool to have a talking parrot, and then sell it becase it didnīt talk. Sad

It just seems thats one of the outstanding features of parrots.. like everyone assumes a dog can do tricks?? I find it sad too that people want to buy and have a parrot just for its talking abilities.. they're more than just voiceboxes!

Exclamation Surprised Shocked Really? I can't believe they advertise that! Also the store Shirin said about trading in your canaries that don't sing! They're probably females Laughing Actually if you look at it this way, it is maybe good... it gets stupid people to turn in their parrots so they have a chance of going to a good loving home instead, with someone who doesn't care if it talks!

Yeah that's right.. It gives them a second chance. However, I think those people should read about it first, and find out that a parrot isn't a programmed thing. Sad
