| Repelling rats? |
|
|
I heard a rat or a mouse chewing inside my wall last night. I've checked and I don't see any holes (yet). If a rat gets inside, I know it will be dangerous for my cockatiel. I've heard that rats and mice like bird seed so maybe that's what's enticing it.
I am considering buying one of those electronic devices that emits a frequency that repells rats and mice. The product I was looking at claims it emits frequencies too high for cats, dogs, or people to hear. They left out birds! Has anyone ever used one of those devices and do you know if they are safe to use around birds? |

Oh, I don't know if I'd risk it. I just don't know ...
Is there anywhere outside the wall, maybe wherever it's coming in from, that you could safely put some decon - where she isn't exposed to it?
that's a tough one & I wish you luck with it!
I'm sure it is from the seeds dropping on the floor. I've got 2 cats, so haven't been bothered with rodents inside the house, but they congregate outside to eat the food that falls from the feeders |

Oh, yes! Kittys are a good rodent control method! I'm half-way tempted to borrow our neighbor's cat. I guess that wouldn't work either because Whitney doesn't care much for cats or rats.
You're probably right about not taking a chance on that electronic device since I don't know if there are any adverse effects on birds. I could safely put some decon where Whitney can't get it because the chewing sounded like it was coming from the bathroom wall. Wonder if they go through the pipes? Yikes!
I'm hoping the rat will give up and leave but that's probably wishful thinking. |

I think I would try the decon, if you can safely do it. And, you know, they might go away if you KEEP bothering them, but you'd want them to go away BEFORE they have millions of cute little baby rodents - YIKES!!! I don't know if they get in thru pipes or not ?
Periodically I have to set decon outside & it's worrisome with the dog & grandkids, so it has to be strategically placed. |

I had mice in my building when I was in University. I had Eddy the canary at that time. Once I came home from school and a mouse was sitting under his cage eating the left over bird seed. I was horrified. I investigated those high pitched sound repellers but decided that I didn't want to take a chance that it might effect my bird. In the end I went with sticky traps. I also plugged up all holes with steel wool. Of course, the landlord did some work as well. |

How horrible to see a mouse under your canary's cage! Hope your canary wasn't too traumatized. |
