Hi there!
I have just finished reading Tony Juniper's book about the tragic story of the Spix's macaw.
It is really a very sad story because it shows how human greed has almost killed off a unique species (the Spix is unique in its genus), and how incapacity to communicate and to compromise is ruining all conservation and recovery efforts.
Every parrot lover should read this book, it is truly moving.
It was written in 2002 and I am having difficulties in finding fresh news about this species. I know Parrot International has a project for the Spix, but does anyone know more about this parrot?
Bye!
Marie
PS : don't forget to buy & read this book! |

Last I heard there was only ONE left in the wild...
It's mate was an Illiger's macaw since it was similar size and it didn't have any of it's own kind left!
They're so rare in captivity, that I don't think anyone has any in private collections, but Loro Parque in Tenerife Island Spain has them. They are a famous zoo with an emphasis on parrot research. They are the world's largest collection of parrots, with many of the most rare species in the world.
