I was wondering how you teach your bird to pick something up and place it in a cup or bowl ect.
I saw Boris the Senegal parrot do amazaing things and want to teach those types of things to Dobby. How do you start with the basica? So far he only knows "dead bird" snd "lay down". |

I've heard you can teach this trick by breaking the trick into a bunch of steps and teach each one individually (Are you doing the click N' treat method?).
1) Approach ball
2) Touch the ball
3) Pick up the ball
4) Move with the ball towards the direction of the hoop or cup
5) Walk a little closer to it..closer..closer..etc.
6) Touch the hoop with the ball
7) Put it in ...It's kind of like playing a game of "Hot and Cold" except a click n' treat means hot and silence means cold--Did you play that game when you were a kid? Also, I think this particular trick might be easier to teach if your bird is target-trained first. At least, that's what I understand from the material I've read. I'm attempting to train my starling, so I've been reading up a bit on training techniques. I don't know how necessary the target training is, but it might make directing your bird in the direction of the hoop easier. Nova thinks it's a game and we're both having a lot of fun with it:) How did you teach Dobby to lay down? |

I wouldn't use an object that rolls.. They can quickly see a game in the object rolling away and you running after it.
Here's what I did:
I let them pick up an object and placed my hand under it. If they put it there, I rewarded them. Then I started to hold my hand a little further away. If they did well I would place a box on my hand. (They would have to drop it in the box if they wanted to put it into my hand)
You can fade your hand once they mastered this. |
