| "The Wave" Trick |
|
|
Here are the steps to "
The Wave
":
1. Set your bird on a training perch with plenty of
his favorite treat. This should be done around
the evening time, or whenever he gets his treats,
and when he is hungry.
2. If you are right handed, you will want to pick up
your bird with your left hand. Move your left hand
toward the bird in the same way that you do when
you want the bird to just step up onto your hand.
3. If your bird steps up easily, then your bird will
naturally pick up his foot in preparation to stepping
on your hand. The instant your bird picks up his foot,
tell him "GOOD" and reward.
DO NOT LET YOUR BIRD TOUCH YOUR HAND OR
STEP UP ONTO YOUR HAND DURING THIS STAGE
4. While you are moving your left hand toward your
bird, hold a seed between your thumb and index finger
of your right hand, while waving your other 3 fingers at
your bird. This will become your cue for the bird to wave.
5. Repeat the above steps so that every time you wave
at your bird with your right hand and move to pick him
up with your left hand he picks up his foot.
Now, if your bird is anything like mine,
he won't pick up his foot up high enough to look like a
wave. So, remember to raise the requirement little by little
for your bird to earn a treat.
Once your bird knows, without a shadow of a doubt, that
when he picks up his foot he gets a treat, raise your left
hand a little higher, and make him reach that foot up a little
bit more before you reward. But the instant he moves
his foot higher than he did the last time give him an
enthusiastic "GOOD" and reward him.
6. Continue to reward your bird for little advances, and
discontinue rewarding your bird for not raising it quite
high enough. Remember to wave at the bird with your
fingers on your right hand while doing this.
7. When you have your bird raising his foot to the correct
level, then change it up a bit. Instead of moving your left
hand in as closely as you have been, back it off about a
half inch or so for your bird. When he gets his foot to the
correct level, continue to reward him. But all the while,
phasing out your left hand so that through time, you don't
even use your left hand anymore, and every time you
wave your fingers at your bird, he waves right back at you!
Best of luck! |
