| Trying to decide on a pet parrot |
|
|
Hello everyone!
I am trying to find a pet parrot. I know all parrots squak at times but I'm sure there are some parrots that don't have that ear-piercing squawk or are more quieter than most. Also one with a good playful personality, not skiddish and is able to get along with other members of the family. I don't want to spend lots of money - $200-$300. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for your help |

Hmmm from what I hear I'd say a pyrrhura conure (one of the smaller ones) They have great personality and are generally not loud.
Also, look into the lineolated parakeets or parrots?? They are truly great and underestimated birds. Funny thing: When they walk on a perch, they don't put one foot after the other but one foot in front of the other like larger parrots do. |

Hi Fluffy Sue,
What do you know about senegals? I've heard lots of good things about them. They are supposed to be quieter than most. They do tend to favor one person but I'v read that if they are socialized with everyone it shouldn't be a problem. |

Well.. I think if you don't want an earpiercing squawk then a Senegal isn't for you. Iago can make an earpiercing sound..
He's quiet most of the time, but he can make really nasty sounds!
Tend to favor one person? It doesn't seem to be applicable on Iago! |

wordybirdy,
we have a senegal and he is anything but a one person bird, anybody that will give him attention is his best friend.
We also both train him and he seems to switch favorite person almost every days. (generally his favorite person is the one that lets him out in the morning.
(and of course one bird doesnt make it so for all birds)
About the noise, usualy he just talks to the 2 tiels in the same volume and does the same whistles now, but he can let out a screech that is very loud, he doesnt do it often maybe on or 2 a day and not even every day.
He is a real character and and can be as suborn as a mule. |

Very loud?! I have the Senegal's close cousin Red Bellied Parrot which makes the same sort of noises, and while he can be noisy (frequent) his loudest is nowhere near the volume of my Eclectus!!! ...and she is not even as loud as large birds like Cockatoos!

Well i'll agree that it is not very load by those standards, but its still load enough to drown out any other noise. |

I also recommend the Budgie!
~ Budgies are very smart & learn quite easily.
~ If they get mad at you they really can't hurt you - the other day Laker was attacking my thumb - hormones I guess - I just wiggled my hand up & down & he stopped.
Another great thing about Budgies is their singing - almost like a canary!
My son was just saying this morning - "it doesn't matter what mood you're in - that Budgie always makes you smile, just looking at him!'.
~ they come in the most amazing colours - & you can house many in a flight cage or small aviary style cage. We have a small cage but Laker is out almost all day. Males are not known for being destructive - although all paper [books/mags] are at risk.
