What kind of bird?  Reply with quote

I was taking Pepe for a walk to the park today and all of a sudden I looked down and saw these two beautiful parrots foraging on the grass. For a moment I thought they might be someone's pet because by the time I actually saw them I was about a metre away from one of them. But they didn't have clipped wings or anything, and they flew a few metres away when I tried to approach a bit more. I didn't happen to have seeds with me so I went home to grab some and when I came back they were still there on the grass.. however one of the bigger gray birds that hang out in the park seemed to be attacking them Sad. Before I got near enough to shoo it away they little parrots flew into a nearby backyard.
I'm just wondering if anyone can help me identify what species they were. I've never seen them before, not even in photos. They were medium-sized -- about as big as my lorikeet --, and they had green heads and a black beak. Their backs went from green to a grayish blue/green color. They had yellow on their tummies and red on their bums. You could only see the red when their wings were spread. They also had yellow under their wings... Does anyone know what species this is?! Smile

Oh, how cool to stumble onto such a beautiful sight! I've read about them before, they are stunning looking! Hopefully they hang out quite a bit near the place you spotted them & you'll see them often on your walk!

I was so excited to see them and the fact that they weren't too scared of me. They really are very beautiful little things, I do hope they stick around but it doesn't seem very likely since that other mean bird was attacking them Sad. The moment I saw them I started searching my pockets for my camera phone only to realize that I'd forgotten it home, silly me!
Shirin, I found what sort of bird it was by looking at some articles on parrotsociety.org.au... they didn't have this species in their articles, but they had the neophemas which I thought had some similar characteristics and were also called grass parrots, so I did a google image search on grass parrot and found a picture of what I'd seen Smile

Lorrie recipies  Reply with quote

Have you tried the lorikeet recipies on that website for Pepe? I make up the wet and dry mix for Pilot and he devours it. Since I have been feeding him this his feathers really seem to have become a lot brighter and he just seems happier and heathier then when he was on the comercial stuff. It's also very cheap to make. Always a bonus Razz

No I haven't tried them, what was the link again? Does it take long to make the mix? I don't really get much time to cook for me or Pepe (and I suck at it too Embarassed ). I can try and give it to him a few times a week if it's really good though. While on the topic of lorikeets, I'm just wondering.. when Pilot molts does he get gray patches on his chest where the feathers haven't grown back yet? Pepe has a couple of small patches where it looks like he's missing a feather or two. Initially I was scared that he might be plucking but I've been checking all the feathers he drops and none of them seem pulled, so I'm wondering if it's normal?

Hi,
Head to www.parrotsociety.org.au then click on 'articles & photo's' then 'Australian Lorikeets Part 1'. about half way down they have a nectar mix, then a dry mix. They are about as easy as you can get. No cooking, you just add water to the nectar mix whenever you are giving them some, and the dry mix you just give as is. The only thing I couldn't find was the maltagen so I just left it out. I got the glucose powder from a health shop and everthing else from the supermarket. She is a breeder so I trust she knows what she is talking about Wink
Pilot has just started his first molt since I've had him and he definately had grey downy patches where the feathers are coming out. I read about someone else on the internet worrying about the exact same thing so I guess its just normal for lorries. Pilot is not plucking at all since he seems to be losing all the feathers on his head at the moment.
