What will happen to our flocks when...  Reply with quote

Alot of the birds that we own as companions will hopefully(?) out live us and I think that alot of people purchase them without thinking about this point. (myself included Sad ) I have been thinking about this alot lately though as I am not married, have no children and am thirty ....something years old. I believe at least 3 of my 4 babies could outlive me. (I hope anyway) So I was wondering what others in this situation would do and hopefully get some ideas from some of you?

Mine is a much different situation as yours Ivy. I have a 6 yr old grandson who is thoroughly enthralled with my macaw & is very good with both of my birds, & the birds are very familiar & comfortable with him. So I'm sure that's who will most likely end up inheriting Manu. Actually if anything were to happen to me in the near future, I feel that there are several in my family who are willing & able to take up where I leave off with both of my birds.

It is a good thing to think about, so that you will know your loved ones aren't just given to a shelter, or other stranger in the event anything would happen to you.

Cathy, you are very lucky then. I don't have any brothers or sisters either. I do have two half sisters but they are not interested in parrots really. Sad

You're right Ivy, & I do consider myself lucky in that sense.

I guess in my case, by the time anything would happen to me, my siblings would be fairly old too, so I am lucky to have kids & grandkids that could take over for me, for the duration of Manus time. Most likely anyway.

You are only 30 something, so you've got some time to think about it & maybe start thinking about someone you could kind of "groom", so to speak, to take over for you some day. Do your siblings have any children? That might be a possibility.

That's a very good point to bring up Ivy. Right now if i had to think about it, I don't have anyone either. My sister is a cat person, so she's not too interested in birds, and i wouldn't trust her anyway, because she's not responsible enough for a bird... and she and my Dad are really the only family I have. I do plan on getting married someday, but I don't plan on having kids Confused so I really don't know who would inherit my fids if they outlive me Confused

No Cathy. My sibs don't have any children nor are they married, but I suppose you are right. Maybe someday they will. I guess I just feel a bit uncomfortable with my situation right now because it takes so much dedication and love to keep birds and they can live such a long time. Not like a dog or cat. Plus anything is possible nowadays in this world, so it's something I would at least like to temporarily resolve.

My kids would be inheriting my birds, they all have their favorites. I try to teach them as much as I can about my birdies and their care so when the time does occur, they are prepared for parronthood.

Hi,

Well I don't have kids yet, but we're planning on having a little family, so hopefully if I live to the ripe old age, I can teach my kids all about birds and may be stir their interest in them. So yeah, may be that... otherwise, if something was to happen to both of us, then I guess my parents would be more than happy to take care of Apollo, not sure about the budgies though...

I have been thinking of this.. But as far as Iago & Flit concerned: They can go to my sister.. But Zazu.. I greatly worry about him as he's such a difficult character.. Sad

I did want to send Zazu to the rescue but after hearing bad stories, I am not sure anymore.
Fact is, I don't know..
I try to live healthy so I can take care of him..

You could consider a friend or a child of a friend OR even an internet friend. Just like us! There are a lot of people making really good internet friends and even meeting in person. That's also a consideration. You can sit and monitor how someone takes care of their own fids. Look and see how beautiful and happy someone elses bird looks. Then, when you feel you are ready, you could pop the question on someone of your choice. There are several canadians on this forum. Wink

Chaquita's mom: I have considered lots of people, but as I live in the Netherlands, an internet friend will be difficult. I don't know if Zazu will ever be able to travel. (Laws of countries etc)

You know that isn't a bad idea if they are within the same country. Wink At least in Canada. Our rules are not as strict as other countrys, at least I don't believe they are. I will keep that in mind....Thanks!
