| Where to find birds |

Hi everyone
I have seen a lot of stuff online saying that there are several options as to where to purchase/adopt birds. I have done some extensive searching for breeders in my area (Texas) but I was wondering if there are other ways of acquiring birds that I have not found.
I am not sure that adopting a bird would necessarily be right for me - birds are a pretty new addition in my life - but I would still like to consider avenues other than buying from a breeder.
It will be awhile before I am ready, but I will hopefully be looking for an eclectus or TAG. Links or other info are appreciated. Thanks, Amy |

Hi Amy and welcome to fluffies! Getting a young bird from a breeder is ideal, but there are many potentially good pets that need rehomed. You can look in the classifieds, avian rescue shelters or breeders. You could also look into talking to your local police department who find birds left behind and also veterinarians who come across owners looking to rehome their birds. Just make sure you do a lot of research on the species that you are interrested in. |

Dear Amy,
I agree with the earlier post about looking for avian rescue groups.
You may also want to investigate humane societies... you can adopt from shelters around the country, not just your local one. We live in Indiana, but adopted Dewey from a shelter in Ohio. It took us a while to find a listing for a bird that we thought would fit well into our family, but we did! Many shelters list some of their available animals at : http://www.petfinder.com/
Please do consider adopting a bird... there are so many who are abandoned or loose their homes because their owner has died or for other reasons. Many are quite tame.

Well after searching high and low for a breeder and not finding any i decided to phone round my local pet shops asking if they had any young small parrots after hearing Seapets had a Senegal I did some research on the computer, and bought a book on the breed and finally bought him. The only downside is that buying from Pet shops is quite expensive. My advice if you do buy from a pet shop is right your own list of things you need and stick to it as they will try and sell you a lot of things you dont patucularly need.
Here is a checklist of questions you need to ask the pet shop :
1. How old is the Parrot.
2. Has the Parrot been sexed.
3. Is it fed on any paticular food.
4. Was it wild caught or Captive bred.
Make sure the bird looks healthy with clear eyes and nose, active with no ruffled feathers or patches with no feathers and dont just listen to the store assistant ask to get the parrot out or put your hand in the cage because the stores primary concern is making money NOT for the well being of you and your Parrot.
