I've always wondered why Caiques were the most expensive parrot for their size too... They're not really that rare. In fact, they're getting quite popular and they are still expensive. Demand? I don't know if they're one of the harder ones to breed? Then there are some species much less common than Caiques that are offered as pets from time to time that don't cost near as much as you'd think... less demand? That's the only reason I could think of.

From what I heard some breeders had trouble breeding caiques because not much was known about their breeding behaviour. I think this is why they have been more expensive then other birds their size. I would have to say caiques and cockatiels make good starter parrots.
Caiques are rarely aggressive and love to play. I have not met a single mean caique. They love to roll around on their back and play with foot toys. They also adapt well and tend to like anyone and everyone if you socialize them. They aren't too loud, but can turn it up if they want your attention. The are okay being in the cage during the day if they have lots of toys to entertain them. When you are home, they will want to be out the whole time! They also should get more fruits than most parrots because they eat more of them in the wild. They can learn whistles and a few short words as well. If you rub their ears they will start yawning until you stop. They are about as high energy as a lory!
Cockatiels are fairly quiet. Males tend to be more independant than females. Males are also more likely to mimic whistles and words. I knew a lady who had a male cockatiel which learned to whistle happy birthday! They come in a range of colours, but the colours don't make a difference in personality. With normal greys, cinnamons, fallows, whitefaces, and most luntinos you can tell the gender when the bird is young. With pearls, once they go through their first molt, around 6 months, the females will remain pearls and males will loose most to all their pearl pattern. Pieds and albinos are practically impossible to sex visually. Cockatiels, like caiques, don't usually pair bond and will enjoy the company of everyone in the family, though they may have a favourite person . Cockatiels are also calmer than caiques. They are okay with being in the cage when you're not home, but will like to be out with out when you are home. Cockatiels tend to be more dusty than caiques, but since they're smaller it isn't too noticeable. Cockatiels don't have a very hard bite and even when agitated will not bite very hard. I have only been bitten hard by one cockatiel and a budgie's bite is much worse then this.
Both would make very good pets. In the end, it depends on which one you find better suits you. |

I had budgies in the past, one in particular who thought she was a human, we got her at an early age and she was parent reared which i felt was strange as how she turned out in the long run She died 3 years later with a tumour on her back. Still to this day i miss her very much
Do Quaker parakeets and Caiques have the same personality roughly as a senegal? I heard quakers are prone to fatty liver disease and feather plucking more than the above. Never heard a bad thing about a Caique though, are they cuddly, Here in Scotland Caiques are rare and expensive compared to Senegals £340 for a baby sennie and £495 for a baby Caique, quakers are £150.
Sorry to be a pain.
I have A Quaker and yes I think all birds are proned to something, Quakers are sweet and cuddly and they will steal your heart, I also have a IndianRingNeck she is a nice bird to but not as cuddly as my Quaker |

Is talking very important for you? There is no guarantee that any bird will talk but you can only increase chances. |
