| Which parrot should i get? Please help :( |
|
|
Hi everyone, my name is Sarah im 20 and im from Scotland.
I have kept over 5 budgies and 4 white doves over the past 10 years of my life and im now looking for a parrot as i have no pets
This parrot would have to be fully weaned and hand reared and would be socialised with the whole family (mostly my boyfriend and i) as we want him or her to bond with us.
I have located a Black headed Caique breeder about 3 hours from me and a Conure breeder about 1.5 hours from me. Im just really not sure which to get, i like both but 2 would be hard work and probably wouldn't not bond like we wanted.
My boyfriend and i would work 8 hours per day but rest asured we'd be home at 5 and spend all evening and weekends with our new member of the family. Im looking for a cuddly, outgoing, non aggressive bird that can adapt to us working but im sure if i get a baby he or she would adjust ok to our daily routine?
Im just looking for advice or both species really.
Cheers.

P.S i dont want a very noisy bird that will drive us nuts screaming constantly, as long as we can train the bird at an early age. I heard that this has been done.
Cheers. |

You have a very hard decision to make!!
I only have an amazon so can tell you about him. He's not a screamer but is very noisy!!! He mostly makes natural whistles and squaks, not for an apartment though... I would go with a BHQ, bc they can entertain themselves while you are away. They are funny and allways on the go, i saw a white bellied qauke at the pet store and he was lovely he layed on his back in my hand and cuddled, something freddy would defo not do.
I thought conures could be quite noisy? you can train birds to not scream but you cant control him while your out!lol
Good luck, Luke. |

I'm not real familiar with with conures or caiques.
There aren't many on this forum with caiques, but what I've seen & heard about them, they're great clowns & make for great campanions in the home - and of course I think they're adorable
I'm sure the same could be said about conures too tho.
Good luck with your decision! I'm looking forward to hearing what you decide! |

Heh thanks mate. Your Amazon sounds like quite a character
Oh i know i cant decide! lol its sooo hard. The both of them are nice but i dont know alot about the conures and caique personality. Though the breeder has mitred, white eyed, blue crowned, sun and red masked conures. |

I can tell you a little about conures. They have a loud squack. We have a green cheeked and a sun conure and they can be loud at times. They are though sweet and fun to watch little birds. The sun conure loves cuddling in my shirt. I don't know about caiques but I met someone once that had seven of them. From what I hear they are always on the move and full of antics. I don't know how loud they are but most parrots all have their loud moments. |

Hey there, i found out that the Black headed caique is £350 and the conures are £250. Not much of a price difference just finding it very difficult and frustrating to decide. I love both of them |

I think all parrots scream from time to time and it would be really hard to train them not to scream... This is how they communicate and express themselfs.
Parrots are usually high maintenance and there is no guarantee that they will bond with you and/or your boyfriend.
Good luck with your decision. |

Hi,
I have a Pionus called Pi (so can only talk about her)
She is going through her mating thing at the moment... so is noisy but generally she is pretty quiet... But the one thing that she is really good at is looking after herself and playing in her cage...
Pionus are quite small - but have a BIG personality...
Good luck with your decision... But please be aware that all parrot make a racket at some time or other..... Also I am lucky that Pi has bonded with both me and my Hubby...

This is hard, if money is not a factor then I would go to the Conuer breeder and see if any of them want to adopt you, then go to the other breeder and do the samething there, then make up my mind. Usually a bird will jump out at you and just fall in love with you.

Hi there, i have a bit of a problem. A breeder in England has offered to courier a baby Caique to my house. I am a bit concerned as i would not be seeing the bird but i'd get to see video and pics of him or her via email and i was advised that the parrot would be ok as its a 5 hour journey and they are quite hardy.
I dont have breeders close to me, i only have a conure breeder who is 1.5 hours away which is ok but they haven't responded to any emails. |

I would have to really really really trust a breeder before I would do this. 5 hour drive is not bad for the bird, but I would want to see the bird and interact with him/her before I layed out the money. You might just get one of their problem birds or a wild caught, and due to the nature of a bird you would not know it had a problem for a couple of weeks. This is just me talking, but if the bird is not the right bird you could have your hands full and be disappointed.

I would go and vist until you found just the right bird. Remember this bird will live with you 30+ years, Take your time and find the right one.

I would feel much more comfortable about aquiring a bird that I was able to see & handle first.
Sight unseen of course, the breeder you've linked to sounds good to me.
I never did visit my breeders home. She's an elderly woman who didn't want me to see her messy home. She brought Jennie the sennie to my house, along with 2 or 3 others in the clutch to decide from.
Don't rush into anything. Take your time & do lots of research, as I know you've been doing, to decide on what would be best. I know things don't always work out, even after doing lots of research, but it's very hard for a bird that is taken into a home that later decides it's not what they want, then they are re-homed ... or even worse.
NOT to say that you would do anything like that, but some times people just don't realize what a responsibility it is bringing a bird into their lives. |
