| Wild Cockatoos in Australia |
|
|
Hello. Hi Cheeta!
I was looking at Apollos page and (remember I said looking...haven't had time to read) wondered if bare eyes, or the western long billed corella are the most common types of cockatoos. What are some others? Goffins? Umbrellas?
Anyone can answer!! Thanks!

the most common would be the sulfur crested toos, next would be the galahs & corellas, I've never seen an umbrella. |

Hi Tonya.
You've got a really good question there.
First of I must say, Poor Apollo's family, the Western Long-Billed is on the 'rare and may become extinct' list that was updated not too long ago. There's apparently only about 2000 birds left in the wild. And I do have to say, I have never spotted one of those little guys out in the wild! Very hard to locate. Major Mitchell Cockatoos are another on those list, but it's on the vulnerable list, which means they are in danger to become an endangered species here in Western Australia.
The most abundant that I've seen here are the Rose Breasted Cockatoo (Galah), and also the little corella, the bare-eyed so to speak. and also the Eastern Long Billed are in quite an abundance where I am as well.
Other cockatoos presents in Australia are the black cockatoos (several different species....) the major sulfer crested, gang gang cockatoos, Palm cockatoos......
The other species of cockatoos such as goffins, mollocan, umbie, the lesser of the sulfur, etc etc are from the surrounding islands of Australia. Indonesia, new guines, Fiji and places like that. |

Also speaking of the Sulphur- crested Cockatoo being so common, here in Victoria they are going to issue license's for people to cull them that's how popular they are |

I would love them to send those sulphurs to Europe, as those galerita galerita (which you're talking about) are very very expensive over here.
Quite rare as well! |

No worries Tonya. glad to be of help.
Greg, it is sad that they are doing that with all our wonderful wildlife. I guess it's a bit different view here to the rest of the world because they are native here.
Sue, I didn't realise the galerita galerita are that rare where you are. I had just assumed that they are pretty commonly bred all over the world!! |

If only people knew how they cull these birds, what we hear from the media is different to what happens on the farms. But l think that is all l have to say on this subject from now on. |
