This is a shot of the new play gym I made for our guys. I went out into the wooded area near our house searching for a suitable tree. All this time I’ve been looking all along the roads I drive for a safe species of tree, and here I have a forest of ash and elm trees across the street! The only problem I had was finding one that wasn’t 40 feet tall! I dragged one home and cut it into pieces small enough to still fit into my oven. I baked them at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour to kill any molds or fungus, and then drilled ½ inch holes for the ropes. I used manila for the main rope in the center and sisal for the smaller climbing ropes. The manila rope is 20% stronger for the same diameter sisal. It’s hung from the ceiling on a stainless hook screwed into the joist. We attached a bunch of their small toys and chew stuff all over like a Christmas tree! I made a swing in the center with a grape wreath.

Norma Jean (IRN) was the first to be brave enough to clime the thing, straight up to the top! I think I’m going to run a steel cable through the main rope just for safety. I saw Norma chewing on the rope at the top a few tines. It’s rated at 600 lbs. but you know those little beaks!
