| Budgie perches etc made from grasses |
|
|
Since the spring i have been feeding my birds some grasses that i collect in our park. Locally they don't spray any more in the park & they allow large areas to grow wild, only cutting playing fields.
As i collected the grasses, & of course as i was throwing out the used pieces, i started to play with the stems......You can see some of the items i've been making in my July etc diary updates.
But here are some photos as well.
Laker on his perch - before i repaired it with twine. He has gone thru 3 perches with the help of his buddy Rio - i was using the grass leaves to tie the perch together but now i use twine. i had to fix the ends to the cage - used hair clips - or else he was rolling on the perch. I also pushed the one end thru vertical & horizontal bars on the cage to get the one end to stop rotating.
These are the repaired one + 2 new ones. The one with lots of grass leaves is for Rio's cage - he enjoys the taste & chews everything.
This is the trellis i made with a willow frame to support the grass. This is how it looked new - at this point it rests on top of the cage as a platform to attach dry summer grass to it's surface. |

I remember that trellis from your homepage. I've always thought it was great... same with the perches. Those truly are some lucky birdies! |

The plant matter are field grasses in the weaving & perches + some Willow branches [very thin ends] to make a kind of frame, for support.
You never know what you'll come up with until you start to play with the material. It's kind of like doodling for me.
Laker enjoyed playing with the material.

Name of the Park?
If you live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, you will know that they have stopped spraying the weeds in the parks & they have stopped mowing all the grasses. They allow large areas near the waterways to be open meadow.
It is there - at Tom Riley Park, near me, that I get a great deal of my materials. If it was a formal garden I would be arrested. |

I don't know about the parks there but I've met a few bird people from around there, on other boards. Some very fun & knowledgeable people.
Hmmmmmmmmm - perhaps phone your Parks & Recreation Department or whatever you have in the area.
Or you could try & grow some nice grasses in a part of your own garden. We had some luck on our apt balcony last summer. I used to grow cat grass & cat nip for my cat - so growing grasses for the birds came naturally. You could even try bamboo shoots. This way you are in control & don't have to worry about someone else's mistakes.
Better safe than sorry.
I also offer my birds our
Hibiscus tree
to play in & they enjoy chewing the leaves & the branches - which are quite safe for them as long as you don't have to spray for insects. & the flowers are edible
There are many ways to have fun with plant materials & your birds will have a lot of fun too.
Check out as many Toxic & Safe plant lists as you can find - many are not complete so you will have to check a few sometimes.
All the best. |

Bamboo?
Is that what you meant or not?
And about the grasses, I want my bird to have somthing that he can perch on, and that he can eat if he wants to. I have recently found this tree outside on my yard. I don't know if it is safe for my birdy, how would I know, should I take a picture of it and post it here?
PS: Hey, I would probobly put links to the pictures. I think Sue would like that...Just saying |

Posting links is OK.
Here's one link to Safe Woods/trees for your bird:
http://www.birdsafe.com/woods.htm
I do not have extensive knowledge on trees - I resort to books for reference.
I mentioned Bamboo because it is more likely to grow in your area than mine. On another board a fellow just finished building a gym for his birds, made out of Bamboo. It came from his garden.
Be aware that the bamboo you can buy at stores is often treated with pesticides so it is not a good alternative. |

Sue just said that it makes the page run faster .
About the bamboo. How much would it cost? And what would be the size for it?
Thanks for your time typing that out! |

Beautiful photos Homebird! I love what you've done with the grasses, I bet they really enjoy chewing on it!
I should try growing some bamboo in pots thru the summer. |

PS: Hey, Cathy, do you HAVE to plant it during the summer? I think I am just going to buy one that is already growing. Not the seeds
So what should I do? |
