Safe metals help please.  Reply with quote

I want to add toys to a playstand and java perch and either want hooks or screw in rings but most are zinc plated. Are brass plated ones safe? Any other suggestions please. Also thinking about making an outdoor aviary in the spring. I don't know what is safe to use, I have heard that galvanised wire mesh is unsafe. Anyone got any ideas?

I have found some quick links & other type of hardware at the large lumber yards/hardware stores that are stainless steel. Some of the on line bird stores sell them too, but I can't think of specific ones right off.

Manus outdoor cage/dog kennel is galvanized, which is by far the cheapest, yet not the best way to go. I spoke to the avian vet before buying ours & he said that washing it well with soap & water & a scrub brush several times will get rid of the "galvanized" coating, basically like weathering it.
You can also buy powder coated & stainless steel ones.
I don't know about brass coated ones tho?

I believe that solid Brass might be to soft?? I don't really know, I try to stick with stanless myself. Try it Cost a little more. But an Macaw has a Bite of 900 lbs sq inch, and an Amazon can bite 700 lbs. Thats a lot of bite, and they will ues it on toys. Brass Coated Hardware, is extermly dangrous, If the Brass is alright (I don't know one way or another) then when they get through the Brass Coating, then you have the same issue as no brass at all. Once again we are back to Stanless.....I hope this helps, My option and $1.25 will get you a cup of coffee...

Brass coated is fine as long as you keep an eye on the rust situation. Once the coating gets nipped off, the 'raw' steel metal inside is then expose to air and moisture which will cause the metal to rust. Keep an eye on it. Steel is fine as long as it is not rusting. Cheers

Thanks again all. Jrmno the problem is not that I don't want to pay for stainless steel, it is that I just can't find any. It isn't quick links I want but hooks or eyes to attatch the quick links to. But I just havn't found any yet. Call in to the UK and I will guarantee you a free coffee! Laughing Incidentally I bought a book on Greys last week and was absolutely horrified, when I read it until I realised it was published in 1983. It was oh so wrong on many things, including Zinc and suggesting giving birds coffee to name but a few horrors. I am taking it back and suggesting that they bin it! It did make me realise how far bird knowledge had come in such a short space of time though.

I'm not sure what it's like over in the UK, but over here in Australia, to get anything stainless steel, I have to go to fasterners specialties store. Basically they sells things like screws, hooks and bolts and stuff like that. May be there are stores like that over there? They are also cheaper to get that way...

Another way that might help is actually getting it from the internet, but that would cost even more due to the postage.. Though i found it much cheaper to get the quick links and stuff sent from online orders since some sells for so much more expensive over here in comparison to an online store in the US!

All stainless steel fittings and odd and ends can be found in boating stores...The fasteners needed for boats are all stainless steel. Smile
