Had a good time looking over your home page once more. Your Buddy is a very handsome dog & looks super smart. The Yorkies are irresistible.

I was quite interested in your Quaker's story. I saw one on a pet ad yesterday - they want to re-home him - loudness issues apparently. He looked well cared for - the woman who owns him said he's really bonded to her & thinks he can rebond. Do you think that is possible?

I've always been fascinated by the Quaker - but we have 2 free flying Budgies - wouldn't that just be an accident waiting to happen? How do you keep peace?

Love your birds, dogs & family. You look like a great couple - hope things are going well for you & yours,
Jac

You asked how i got my keets free flying. Very slowly is the first answer & i'm sure you are used to that one!

Laker - came from a shelter & was flighted & mature when i got him. He really wanted out of that cage big time - he'd cling to the cage door & also work his wings like mad while hanging onto the rope perch. I was very nervous about letting him out because i didn't want him to hit a wall or be impossible to re-cage. None of these things happened [at lest not right away]

For 2 weeks, every day i would sit his cage on the bed & read beside him for a few hours. [i also took his cage to wherever i was working] At first I'd open the cage door & rest my hand inside & offer my hand to be stepped on but he was very frightened of hands. So i used a wooden spoon handle to get him tamer & it worked really well. I'm happy he steps up onto a perch - it's so much easier to get him down from high spots. When he knew the words 'step up' i opened the cage door to let him come out.

The first time he hopped to the cage door & then climbed up the side of the cage. Although he wanted out he was nervous of leaving his sanctuary. He was also not in shape to fly well - even tho he'd tried to keep fit. He could only fly a short distance at first & was breathing very hard. If you have time my diary goes on about it a lot. I think it was about 2 months before he could fly around the room a few times. Now his flying skills are remarkable but just last week he flew into my son's closet & hit the wall! he's OK but his couriosity is getting bigger & he takes more risks.

We trained him to come to us using a 'Recall training' method. YOu could add a clicker as well. I would take his food away right after his breakfast & then just about when he'd normally have another feeding [about 2 hrs] I'd offer his millet & say 'come'. It worked almost immediately. After about 10 minutes of this i put his food in his cage & let him alone. He flies to his cage as a feeding station & so does Rio - they have their 2 feed cups in there during the day.

The baby flies everywhere his big brother goes + he explores more. Now both fly from room to room. I keep the hall dark to discourage them from going into the living room. He's learning by watching.

Hope that helps.

PS regarding the lovely Quaker in the ad - i don't think i'll be able to encourage my husband. His brand new job will require some travel & he already wants me to come too. Now i'm planning bird sitting for my 2 guys for up to a week at a time [still have to think of my son as well who can do some of the care]& don't think it will be good for a re-homed Quaker who might turn to plucking if stressed enough - just don't think that would be in it's best interests - we'll see. If my son was really in to it then that would be another matter. He's 16 & very social.

Your homepage always makes me smile - over & over. The photos are killers - I adore the Lovebird in the shirt & in the seed bowl - just a hoot!

You mentioned you have a bunch of Budgies for new homes - I'm in Canada but I know of a number of US people - on other boards. As far as USA web sites/boards; In the past year or so I've seen a few people looking for Budgies in Bird Board - you might want to check there. I am also the Budgie coordinator on Parrotchatter - smaller group but with all your birds you'd fit in really well - especially with the rescues. Another is Talk Budgie - you'd be surprised at the number of people who are looking for new birds & some in your area. I would be very pleased to see them get good homes - try out these places - if you haven't already.

All the best in 2008!
