Hi again,
I was at work and only had time to look at the pictures. You see I am a man and that is what men do. Just ask my wife. We have adopted some of our birds as well, but we have not yet experince a loss of one of our family. The thought is devesting enough without the deed. I admire your family for adopting the birds you have. I know of the hours of time it takes for a bird to over come all the baggage they bring along to a new home. I am sure they are greatful to have you at thier side.

Thanks for your comments, everyone!
Sentiels, I'm sorry about Digger...just looked at your page. He looked like a happy birdie.
We still miss Mucha pretty badly. But we didn't really know how old he was (we keep telling ourselves). We never really know what happened, his death was such a surprise... we were just coming back from a trip and went to pick him up at my parents' home and he was very fluffed up, his eyes kind of glazed over. My mom said that earlier in the day he had been normal, running on top of their plates while they tried to eat lunch and generally being a friendly pest. Well, we didn't like the look of him and ran him to the emergency vet. Within a couple of hours he was gone, despite all kinds of measures by the vet.
At least with Lila we knew we did EVERYTHING possible... we took her to our local avian vet as well as the vet back where we used to live, who also deals with herbal and holistic remedies... we really think that ended up helping her. We gave her medicine every day for 6 months. We also got her and Sugar a new cage with ramps so she could get around despite her paralyzed leg. Not trying to brag... we just do keep reminding each-ohter that we did everything we could for her.

Hi,
In your Comment you said you used "herbal and holistic remedies" and it help with her feet. You also used a cage with ramps. We have tried both Penn our Quaker. Could you give us more details. Just in case it is something we have not tried yet. We want to give him every oppertinue we can.

Dear John and Carrie,
We used two remedies for Lila... her problem was not directly with the leg, it was the kidney tumor or which, if I understand correctly, caused her kidney or something near it to become enlarged and pinch the sciadic (sp?) nerve to her leg. He gave us two remedies: hypericum (st john's wart), which came in little pills we had to grind up and dissolve in water as a homeopathic remedy, and flax seed oil (three drops 2 X/day, for a budgie). The flax seed oil was to reduce the inflammation. We had a feeling that the flax seed oil was the thing that really helped.... I'm not sure whether this would be applicable in your birds' case... but if you can find a vet who does deal with herbal remedies it might be an idea... as our vet says, it just opens up the possible remedies available to him, which is important because there aren't as many choices in Avain medicine, especially for delicate little budgies.

Thank you, But alse we make a 100 mile drive from Columbus to Cincinnati to take our birds to a good Avain Vet, the resources here in Columbus are limited and scarey. Yes I know all the problems with such a long distance drive. We have had two Emergency drives down to the Vet. Luckly the First Aid he taught us came in handy. Again thank you for responding..

John and Carrie,
I understand...
The "alternative" vet was a 5 hour drive for us (luckily right near my parents' house). We are so happy we have a good "regular" avian vet here in Bloomington, IN.
I'm kind of surprised there is no-one in a city the size of Columbus, Ohio! I wouldn't have thought of it ....That's definitely something we'll have to keep in mind when we move next...

No there are two Avain Vets here in town. But One can hardly speak english, so we spent $200.00 for an annual exam. Then the other one we had major trouble with. When I called our local vet (we had been seeing for 6 months and taken 9 of our 12 birds in to see him for annauls) about one of your birds who had just had two of her toes bite off by another one of our birds, we were told that the Vet does not take appointments today. I told her that this is an emergency and still "No Appointments today" the Vet was in the office and could not even come to the phone. We were told to take her to see some one else. So that is what we did and continue to do to this date.
The best advice I can give is talk to members of local bird clubs. They know who is who around town.
Be carefull about takeing your bird to strangers, even "VETS". |
