Who's training who?  Reply with quote

Recently Mylo and l were walking around the backyard, Mylo tries to fly off only to land within 2 metres from me (due to wings been clipped) so i felt sorry for him.I then went over for him to climb on my hand, back on my shoulder. For a short while he kept on doing that and i did the same only to realize who is training who.Day before yesterday l said no more and when Mylo flew down l ignored him and stood my ground. To my surprise Mylo waited for me, but l instead called him to me,guiding him to climb my hand then my shoulder then giving him a treat. Now Mylo rearly flies of and when he does (trying to test me of course), l wait for him and sure enough he now always comes to me for a lift, instead of me going to him. Very Happy[/u]

This is so funny to read!
It seems like Mylo had been learning you a trick: Picking him up when he would fly off. He he he!
Birds are so smart!

You did a wonderful thing by teaching him YOUR trick he he he!

Way to go!

oh yeah,if l didn't pick it up early Mylo will be telling his friend's ( look what l taught my master Laughing )sad but true. With alot of birds we don't realize who WE are until they the parrots teach US into a routine, that's the funny part about having these wonderful parrots, they keep us guessing.. Laughing That's why we have to treat them with respect sometimes there smarter than us without us realizing.

Oh yeah, that's one reasons l find these parrots so exciting, you can expect the unexpected from them when you least expect it. :lol:by the way Anna is Caruso a clipped or free flight parrot just wondering? For Mylo is clipped while Lielow wasn't.

Caruso is clipped.
I had let her wings grow out once and she got so unmanageable that I decided it would be best to have her wings clipped.

Good choice in my opinion, because even though l believe in free flight birds unless you have the right training which can take an enourmous amount of time from what l have heard.IRN being excellent flyers can get into all sorts of trouble if not supervised 100%.Lielow was free flying but was restricted to house and garage which she became bored of after a while and needed more stimulation thus turning into destruction of things.Things like curtains where she always got her feets caught in and going into places that was scary for me.Mylo on the other hand goes everywhere within in my street at the moment, practising driving short distances with me like only within 50 metres to get used to travelling.Walking up and down the street about 100 metres and watching cars go by as well for he? got fright a couple of times when l first took him? out of my property but he is used to that now.So clipping Mylo's wings gives both of us more freedom this way keeping him stimulated and one day we could go for a day trip. Very Happy

I love to see them fly  Reply with quote

My 2 Casper and Bella have their wings and I love to see them fly in their avairy. I won't ever clip them again onyl because now I have them in the avairy.

I have sat out there and laughed so hard at wathching Casper play with this little plastic dish that dog food came in. I keep them now just for those 2 birds. They take that thing and fly down to pick it up. The other will go over and try to take it away. If they drop it then one of them will go fly down and get it and fly to another spot in the avairy.

Watching them play tug of war with their toys is funny. Casper if very friendly and wants to be scratched on and around his neck. Bella can't stand watching me do that and she will come over to see what we are doing. I'll try to do her but she will fly away. In a minute she will be back to check us out again. My goal is to one day touch her, but for now she says "no".

Good to hear Casper and Bella are having a great time in their avairy.Like how they play keeping off with the bowl, makes me laugh Laughing Don't worry to much when you try to scratch Bella and she flies away. Give her time in my opinion, to get use to you and Casper .Flying away is an automatic response when a bird see's a hand approaching ,because Bella lose's sight of your hand going around the head and neck area l believe, even though Bella know's you. There are many techniques you can try depends on the personality.Try stick to keep the same routine when training and praise Bella and Casper for any small step to what your trying to achieve followed by reward for acheiving(treat). Also keep your movents when you are with Casper slow when Bella approach's,this way she has plenty of time to think, keep eye contact as well with Bella nothing sudden even when you try to scratch her. This way Bella has more time to think and judge her decision next. Smile

Thanks Greg and I'll try that the next time I go out and sit with them which will be Friday. They are such pretty birds and I do love them and want Bella to get in on the scratching. They also love the popsickle sticks to fly around with. When they were in the house they loved foot toys and would always want the one the other had Laughing . I wonder if others sit and just watch their birds interact with each other? Have a Great Day!

Good luck and keep me posted with the progress, just remember when you don't succeed try try again and l'm sure things will work out with Casper,Bella and yourself. As to interacting with with my parrots, yes absolutely, most weekends Mylo and l observe the other parrots in thier avairies which l find rewarding,Mylo comes with me to the flight avairy for clean up duties and maintence.Interacting with your birds l think is one of the most important things you can do with them.Like youself Casper and Bella, they appreciate your time with them to for they would not approach you if they didn't (you are one of the flock to them). Smile

Thanks again Greg and I will keep you posted and everyone else. I'm sure by now everyone knows I'll talk about my birds Laughing

I just finished reading a book on amazons and a lot of what I red also goes for my Indian's. I'm a little nervous with Bella cause she acts like she wants to bite when she comes up to see what is going on. That sharp beak scares me some. Ive never been bitten by her but I saw what she did to my husband and it didn't look like it would feel good Crying or Very sad

Anyway I'll keep trying with her and see what happens. Thanks Dana Wink
