| Feeding my new Lory? |
|
|
Hello,
I'm going to be getting a baby moluccan red lory from a breeder, probably next week, Ive been trying my best to research them as much as possible, I think I've read all there is to read on the internet, which doesn't seem to be all that much.
Currently, I have a blue and gold macaw, and Ive worked in pet stores for a few years, so Im pretty familiar with birds in general, but this is my first lory.
if anyone could give me some advice as to what you think the best foods are, it would be greatly appreciated, also, I will be handfeeding him, I've hanfed many birds, but never a lory, from what I understand, it's a bit different from feeding other birds? I've always used a syringe for handfeeding other birds, but the breeder says she uses a hair dye bottle (never used for hair dye of course) and Ive read that other people let them drink the formula from a cup, Has anyone handfed lories? what's the best technique?
also there seems to be much debate about feeding them in general, some people say feed them a dry diet, some people feed them exclusivley fresh food or necatar, some people say sprouts etc...
I figure, it's all up to debate, this is what I was planning on doing, let me know if you think this is good.
Scenic dry lory powder, free choice
Harrisons and or scenic pellets free choice
mix of fruits and veggies, fresh 1 x day
Nekton Lory 1 x per day
and fresh spouts 1 x day
along with healthy people food that I eat.
also, many times in the morning Im in a rush to get off to work, and I have other animals that need tending to, so I was thinking on these days I would use a mix of fresh (low iron) fruits/veggies that have been prepared earlier in the blender and then put into ice cube trays, and dispense a cube or two in the morning, has anyone tried this?
sorry for the long post, I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right for my new baby
Thanks for any advice you have to offer!

I feed my Lorikeets fresh fruit and veg 2 times a day. They also get a bowl of either wet or dry mix. If i can get them, i also supply my Lorikeets with Grevilliea and Bottle Brush flowers
I don't like the idea of giving Lories dry seed as it wears down the bristles of the tongue.
I think the diet you are planning on giving your bird is quite good. I wouldn't give a Lorikeet pellets. There is apparently a new product, Lory pellets, i haven't tried it but it could be good |

I fed mine the dry nectar giving them lots of water because they tend to mix it together making a big mess, they liked wet mix too, they also got lots of fruit and veg, mainly apples, grapes, peas, corn and the like, I also pureed and froze their food in advance, they liked the moist friut and veg the most because they licked it. Probably not a good idea to give them too much honey, they also go crazy over anything with sugar or salt but both are very bad for them as they can't matabolise them the way we can, too much sugar can turn them diabetic even though they love it (many squabbles, biting, screaming and hudini stunts if they saw me with ice cream! I had to hide it from them) You probably already know not to give birds caffine, chocolate, alcohol or avacado as they are poisonous to them as are some plants. The will take seed but I don't know how good it is for them, I know they like playing in it, their favorite and staple food was the dry nectar which also comes in pellet form. |

I feed my rainbow lorrie a homemade wet and dry mix from the website listed on my post on this forum. I find it works really well, and is easy to store. He also gets fresh fruit. I am working on the vegies. At the moment he just turns his nose up at them. |

i'm surprised to hear that Pi doesn't like vegies! Pepe can't get enough of them! (especially the green leaf things that come with the green salad mix you can buy from the supermarket). You probably already know this, but have you tried eating some in front of him? |

Feed your lories plenty of fruit and greens. My two lorikeets Dexter and Chacha both love fruit, ranging from apples to mangoes and also fresh greens.
It is unvoidable for them to not love the usual - ice-cream, jelly, sweet biscuits etc. I give a bit to them once in while to treat them, but normally i run and hide and try to eat my ice-cream without them sabotaging me |

You shouldn't feed ice cream to birds, they're lactose intolerant |
