Baby Lovebirds  Reply with quote

So my lovies eggs have hatched and so far there are two babies. There are four more eggs that will most likely hatched as they were all fertile. One hatched on Saturday I think and one today. Last time I checked the nest was Friday night and now there's two babies. One tiny one and the other is almost twice the size. I took a picture, but the batteries died so I will have pictures up soon of the two babies. The parents are feeding them well as their little crops were full.

So far everything is going great ! Very Happy

I'm planning on handfeeding at least 3 of them. The moms a whitefaced double violet and the dad is a blue american cinnamon with a dark factor (possibly a seagreen cause his dad was a whiteface, but the breeder I got him from wasn't reliable so for all I know the hen could've cheated on her mate cause the males beak doesn't look like he should be a seagreen). Here is a blurry picture of part of mom and the babies.

If I am seeing correctly the two babies I can really see might be creamino or lutino from the eye color which kind of looks red to me. It might be just the picture but I don't know...I am not an expert on lovie genetics Embarassed much to complicated for me!

LOL! It is the camera. It reflects the pink skin and not the darker underneath. They all appear to have dark eyes at the moment. The 4th egg just hatched today and the oldest baby is starting to get some darkish feathers in. Genetically, I don't think they can be a creamino or lutino if the parents aren't split for it and since the dad is an American cinnamon and the mom a whiteface blue there is not lutino or creamino in them. If I ever get stuck, I use the genetics calculator.

Thanks for the congrats! It seems one of the babies does have red eyes which I didn't think was possible. I am wondering if the male is split for lutino and split for american cinnamon. I will have to ask a couple people and see what's going on.

So it seems cinnamons are born with red eyes which darken over time. Now, because american cinnamon is a sex-linked mutation all my females will be cinnamons and all my males will not be cinnamons. No need for DNA testing!

Thanks for the congrats! Here are some pictures of them as their growing up. The youngest baby had splay leg, but it is being fixed now. I'll have a picture of her coming soon. The little green one I am letting the parents raise, but the splay leg and the other 3 I'm raising. I couldn't take all my lovies babies away cause I felt too guilty.
