Oh Kellie, that would have been great!! You actually reminded me that my mother in law actually has a tree in her backyard, though not very big yet... But the only thing is, she lives about 2 hours away... hehe.. I can't justify the drive there just for macadamia!! LOL |

Oh, I'm sure it was worth the effort! I bet it's made for some good memories to smile at too. Around here, Manu is our expert nut cracker |

Yes it's been heard around the states for years about the mold in peanuts. I have given them to my birds for years, and they are all fine. It's very limited amounts, but it comes in their seed mix as well. I use Sleek & Sassy No Sunflower Garden Variety. They get about 1 a week? |

Yikes! That's expensive! But perhaps you can buy just 50 grams? That would do! |

I see, I also haven't heard of birds dying, but I'm a bit cautious. Anyway, macadamias are far higher in nutrition??
Also, have you ever tried palmnuts? |

Macaws are supposed to need the Macadamia's If I recall correctly. Pine Nuts are also good for them. Most bird supply places sell both pine and macadamias.....just WHOA are those nuts expensive.. I'm sure it's because it takes so much to 'shell them'. I can find them here Cathy in the grocery store - shelled.....in the nuts section in little tiny jars. You know where the baking nuts are. YIKES they hurt the pocketbook! |

yeah, macadamias aren't cheap around here either. Apollo will just waste most of it if i give some to him! he likes to grind them to power form and that's it! he's just so spoilt when it comes to nuts and treats. His daddy just give it to him by the handful!! Bleh.... |

Parfie.. I don't think they need the macadamia.. Not as in 'it's part of their diet' in the wild.
It's just a very very nutritious nut.. But also high in fat. Perhaps that's why they recommend it to macaws? |

No, I've never heard or read anywhere that it's essential for macaws to have mac. nuts. Obviously it's not vital, as Manu has never had any, I don't think, in the 2 yrs that he's been with me! However, I'm sure that like with a lot of other things, it's good for them to have them at times & not going to hurt anything if they do. |
