taming new lovebird  Reply with quote

I just brought home a new lovebird six days ago. It was handfed but was in the pet store for about a week without much handling. He will stand on my fingers with the up-up command and has only bitten me a couple of times, but it seems so nervous when out of its cage. All it wants to do is go "up" to my shoulder or whatever is handy but higher than where he is, and doesn't like to be petted. He is playful in his cage but not when out of the cage. I take him out two to three times a day. Am I on the right track? Will he get more playful and sociable and how long will it take? I love the little bird already but I feel it doesn't like me yet.

I just wanted to add that my new lovebird is still young. He still has black marks on his beak and doesn't have his full coloring yet.

I think you're on the right track, however, I wouldn't allow the bird on your shoulder.. Smile
Try to prevent him running to your shoulder, and when he's sitting on your finger or anywhere you want him to be, reward him.. Smile
Don't make a 'drama' out of it when he's sitting on your shoulder. Quickly put him on your finger without telling him he's a bad bird: Birds love attention, good or bad!

I hit the submit button too early.. Sorry!

I don't think this bird doesn't like you.. It's too early for that.. Smile
Just try to involve the bird in your activities like doing laundry etc. Tell him what you're doing.. Smile
(You can may a small playstand for him where he can perch while you're busy)

Thanks for the tips. Skittles learned quickly that I don't want him on my shoulder. First he went up to my shoulder like a rocket and then he started finding other directions to go. I do have a stand that I am getting him familiar with. So far he doesn't want to stay on the stand.

Hi there..
When he jumps off the stand, distract him first, then have him stepped up.. When you put him on the stand, give him lots of praise etc..
Repeat when needed..
Flit will stay quite long on his gym now! Except when there's food on the floor. (On the gym outside)
