|
|
I took Chi Chi to the pet store yesterday where it was purchased.. I watched the guy clip chi chi's winge I was so excited because IO thought maybe now I had a chance to work wioth chi chi better. It looked as if he removed alot. So I get home and I let Chi Chi out of the pet carrier and it was as if they werent just clipped./.. HOW MUCH HAS TO COME OFF BEFORE THERE FLYING IS COMPROMISED??????? I want Chi Chi to be able to keep from falling but to be able to fly from one room to another????? How am I gonna work with it and train it if I cant keep it with me... GRRRRRRRRRRRR Frusterated..... |

Well, training can still be done with unclipped birds, just takes more patience. Lovebirds are very lightweight, so they can still fly some distance even with clipped wings. Do you know how many feathers were clipped on each wing? For my lovebirds to not be able to fly, my vet clipped 8 feathers on each wing, but that also made them land hard, so I don't recommend it. |

Also, can you do the training in a room with the door closed? That way he won't fly from room to room. It's recommended that you do the training in a small room, like the bathroom or something, away from the bird's cage, so there are no distractions. I tried this with my diamond doves, they are fully flighted, and not at all tame, but after only 10 minutes of trying, I could get them to perch on my finger and stay there. |

wow! That is a very bad job they did, I would not bring your birds back to them for grooming. I see now why Chi Chi can fly perfectly , if they have even one of the first frew primaries there, they will be able to fly.
This is what a proper wing clip should look like:

Basically the first few primaries (5-8 ), should be clipped, just below the primary coverts. |

If you look at my lovebirds on this page, the fourth picture down shows exactly how a properly clipped wing should look: http://www.fluffies.org/en/flu.....try_id=133 |

Yes, but start out with 5-6 feathers first, I'm worried 8 might be too many, and cause him to crash. For my lovebirds 8 was too many. |

wow, that's what I would call a 'beauty' clip. It is clipped so that the birds stil have their 'natural' look when not flying, but it is a totally useless clip. I'm glad you were able to fix it. |

Lovies are such good flyers! Some lovebirds (Like Gizmo) only stopped flying when I clipped 11 (!!) feathers, all very short.
It made him land in a nice 45 degree angle. |
