Hallo everyone, I have bought blue&gold macaw named Lucky with nearly 7 months from my friend who is a breeder, and he is just wonderfull bird, I have also a timneh african grey and blue fronted amazon. Now I have a question concernig the weight of my macaw, Lucky has exactly 1000 grams, is this normal for his age or is he underweight? Thank You in advance and best regards from Belgrade!

Hi! Congratulations to you! I have a B & G too & he's absolutely great! I think they make the most wonderful companions Very Happy
Luckys weight sounds real good! I'm not sure if you mean you've had him for 7 months, or he's 7 months old. The ave wt of a mature B & G is 900 - 1200 grms, so Lucky falls in there very nicely! What kind of diet does he eat?

Sounds like you're getting on real well with him! I would really love to hear more about him & see some pics if possible. Have you registered for a fluffies homepage & diary? I'd love to see pics of all your fids Very Happy

Thank you for quick answer, yes he is 7 months old, I have bought him last Tuesday. I give him fruits, vegetables, seed mix for macaws, but i want to know what is best for him? I will register as soon as possible, i have very little time this week because of bussines. I will let you know when I do that. When will he have his maximal size and weight, I can not find that on internet? Thank You once again! Greetings!

P.S. Excuse me for my bad english, I am better in German.

Oh, your English is very good! Especially compared to my German, which is NON existant Laughing
I'm afraid I'm just not sure when they reach their size maturity either, tho I'd say they're not going to grow anymore once they're a year old. But their weight will fluctuate a bit, no matter what age, depending on food intake, amount of excersize & other factors, even season changes. And I would venture to say that Lucky still has room to grow, tho probably not a LOT more.
Are your other fids on a pellet diet? My macaw, Manu is on a pellet diet, which my avian vet recommended, but I don't push it on others much becuz there are such different points of view on the subject. I also give him large amts of other fresh foods, the viggies, fruits, nuts, legumes, pasta & such & the occaissional seeds & other packaged parrot treats.

Here's a link to a page that you might want to read. If you scroll down the page, there's a "diet" section. But keep in mind, that this too is just one persons point of view

Oh no, please don't get me wrong. Don't change his diet becuz I give mine a pellet diet! I guess if I were you, I would do some research on the subject, read the different points of view & then make an informed decision based on that.
I JUST read something on a website yesterday written by someone in Australia warning about the disadvantages of feeding pellets. I'll have to try to find that site again!

Good luck Very Happy !

There are some pellets in the seed mix that I gave to my birds, but they wont eat them, and I know that only seed diet is not good for birds health. I will try to find the best solution.

Thanks, that is very interesting, I also gave sprouted seed to my birds twice a week, they like it very much.
