| Hahns strange episodes-mice? |

Have been off here for ages so good to be back. I have a real concern about Peanut. She was really ill some months ago. She was sick five times, yellow poohs and very poorly. She was sleepy and seemed confused. She was tested for everything we could and nothing showed up. She was at the vet for a week and slowly recovered. It cost a fortune to find nothing wrong with her. I am really careful about what I use in the house and have even compiled a list from my research on the net for the place I got her from. She took some time to recover properly but had been fine for ages until recently when she was ill again, not as bad as before but very poorly. Not eating, unsteady and seemed confused and scared of everything, she could not stand on her perch and I had to move her to a small cage to stop her flapping about in her cage. I hand fed her on moist Harrisons for three days and gave her probiotics and she recovered again. I then discovered a family of field mice had moved in and were getting in her and Ziggy's cages (I have had them before but can't remember if it coincided with her previous atack). Is it possible this could be a cause of her problem? She has been acting strangely again and discovered that I still have at least one mouse. I had also noticed that a couple of nights at around midnight she was panicking in her cage, she is covered at night. She was in such a state I got her out and put her in the small cage in my room for a couple of nights. Any thoughts anyone? |

Yes, Mice could be the cause of these issues! You need to get them out as soon as possible-- the mice & the bird. The pooh's - can be nasty, contaminated.
I surely would take the bird back to the vet - let the vet know why you think it could be ill.
Keep in mind - while removing the mouse. Its best to not use any products - a mouse trap would be safest way to be. Good luck & I hope the problem is resolved quickly! |

Thanks, I have got rid of the mice now and she does seem to be getting much better steadily. I havn't taken her to the vet because he tested for everything going last time and it cost me over £400 to find out nothing. Now I have got rid of the mice I can rule that out, obviously if she wasn't recovering I would take her. |

Hi Joti, I read somewhere that mice leave a trail of urine wherever they go so it's not only the poos that you have to worry about, could the urine have soaked into the cage? Would it be possible for you to leave her normal cage unoccupied for a time after disinfecting it so that every corner of it has time to dry out completely and there were no moist areas for germs to survive? I remember getting mice in the house when I was a child and they were very hard to get rid of, good luck. |
