HI Everybirdie! I'm new here!  Reply with quote

I have several birds including a 7 year old blue-throated (caninde) macaw named Pingo. Does anyone else on the forum have a BTM? Just curious cuz they are pretty rare. I personally dont know anyone else with one.

I am also fostering a 13 year old Harlequin, whose owner is very ill. Owner is a friend and, at this time, we dont know if she is going to recover, so Gypsy may stay permanently. We just got Gypsy this past Sunday and we are really struggling. He is very spoilt and has never been confined inside his cage. In my home, all birdies sleep in their cages, and have to be in their cages if I leave the house. This is causing MUCH stress to both me and Gypsy. He began plucking when his owner became ill 2 years ago. I took him for a well-birdie check up at my avian vet and he got a clean bill of health, so we think the plucking is behavioral. He is currently being quarantined away from the rest of my flock. He really enjoys a soaking bath, and I am using tap water now. His owner used these stinky bath preparations from a pet store and I think they did more harm than good. He really does smell bad. Someone smoked around him, cuz when Gypsy gets wet, he smells like tobacco smoke, as well as that perfumy, smelly bath preparation.

Thanks for listening! I hope to hear from some of you too!

Hi BTMmom,

You should give Gypsy time to get used to his new situation. A new caretaker, a new house, other parrots/parakeets around him, sleeping in a cage. Missing his old caretaker and his old surroundings. That is a lot of adjusting for anyone. That takes time.
