| Manu is coughing |
|
|
I've noticed Manu making a strange, cough like noise for the last several days. And I've scheduled an appt with the avian vet, but he wont be in until Thursday.
However, they do have other vets there that could see him if I think he needs to be seen sooner than Thursday. It's just that I really trust & like our regular A vet.
Any opinions? He doesn't SEEM to be acting at all different, other than that noise. It seems to be doing it more often than he began.
I don't know... do you think I SHOULD consider it an emergency situation & take him in sooner?
Oh, I know I'm the moderator & supposed to be the one giving advise, & I'm very good at giving opinions, but I hate deciphering if something is an emergency situation or not |

Just asking... is he by chance trying to imitate your cough? Apollo's great at it!!! He even sneezes like me!!
But if he isn't.... is there seems to be a time that he does it more?? like morning or night time? before or after food?? Not sure, I haven't had anything like that... mostly sneezes from husk stuck in nares and ceres...
I think Thursday should be ok to wait till for Manu? I mean he's still active and being himself right? It's only two to three days to go? sorry, can't quite get this time difference at this time of the night.. hehe |

Yeah, I know what you mean about the time difference! The appts sched in about another 48 hours, a little less, so I guess it's OK to wait.
He did this before, maybe about a year ago. And I thought then that he was immitating my cough. But then he just stopped doing it - until now. Tho, that could very well be what he's doing.
And of course, he's been to the vet several times since he was doing it before & they've never found a problem, tho I don't think I've ever mentioned the coughing before either.
Jeez what a worry!! I just worry about mold, fungis, bacteria, viruses .... EVERYTHING! |

oh, but don't we all when it comes to our fids? I know I do!!
When Apollo started doing it, I was a bit worried... but then I quickly realised that it was him imitating me coughing due the fact that he'd do it straight after I had cough...and he'd keep doing it everytime I cough...( I had a pretty severe flu then.. and I was worried that he might have some how caught it off me when I knew very well that he couldnt! but he worried me anyway.. ) So that's how I figured it out... then I had the funnest time getting him to cough by pretending that I'm coughing, and he'll follow suits... he did that too when he picked up the sneezing.. He's soooo cheeky!!
I'm wondering may be that he is imitating you somehow.. he learnt it awhile back, imitate it a bit, then decided to give it a break, but something had reminded him of it, and now he's having a ball doing it!! LOL...
No don't listen to me.. Keep that vet appt... it's good to have him checked out. |

Hey Cathy.. I can understand your worries.. I was thinking the same as Bih: He could be immitating!
Is there any chance you can put him on a good accurate scale?
You know what my avian vet recommended? Get a bag of salt, and weigh it in the supermarket then weigh it at home. You can easily tell if your scale is accurate.
Also, he's eating right? And drinking? Just the same? Or different? How about his stool? |

I don't have a scale!! And I've GOT to get one, I know! In fact, I'm going to just go out this week & get one. Hubby has scoffed at the idea, but I know it would make me feel much more comfortable to be able to watch his weight, Jennies too. And in the long run, it will probably save us some money on vet bills!
But, yes, he seems to be eating & drinking as normal & I've been keeping an eye on his poops which are good too. |

He he you don't have one? Hmmm let me think.. The vet also suggested that I took Flit in a box inside the supermarket. To weigh him. Then weigh the box but I guess it's going to be a LARGE box for Manu! (Sorry for laughing, I know you're worried)
I think you needn't to worry.
Cathy, do you use apple vinegar (organic) in Manu's drinking water? It helps to fight some fungus.
Some drops are sufficient.. |

Ah, laughing helps ease the worry a bit Sue!
I just need to get a scale, I think it would be an immense help to me!
I add 1/2 tsp of apple cider vinegar to 1 gallon of water & give it to all the fids. You know, I use a new, clean milk container every week for their drinking water. Gawd, I hope it's not stuff growing in the container that would cause a problem! Maybe I should resort to just putting several drops into each bowl of water. |

LOL... Oh Sue, you're a crack up!! you made me laugh a little too much at work there girl!!
you'll need to sound prove that box too if you want to take Manu into a shop to weigh him!!
Cathy, A weigh is definitely a good idea. I have the kitchen digital gram scale, it works really good (When Apollo would stay on one spot for me!!).
I'm sure it's not the container... really... i think the container wouldn't have growth in it if you've cleaned it out, and keep the mix in the fridge to keep cold. |

Yeah, that's what I do with the water Bih, it just makes it a bit easier than putting drops in their bowls each time I give them fresh water.
He's not done the coughing noise at all tonite. I'm probably worrying about nothing again , but I guess it's better to err on the side of caution. He was doing it quite a bit this morning. |

yeah, that's what i thought you did. i really have to get myself some of Apple cider vinegar!!
it's ok to worry about our birds.. they are afterall very good at hiding any illnesses they may have until it's too late.. i'm not saying that's the case with Manu though. i'm sure he's just remembered how to 'cough' like humans and was having a ball doing it.
i find that with Apollo he'll pick up something and he'll repeat it over and over and over again, but might stop for a while before i hear it again! i hope that's the case with Manu, but it's always good to get them in for a check just to make sure that they are ok. |

Hey Cathy.. I don't think there's anything wrong with the container? I think you keep it cool in the fridge?
I'm not sure though, I just add some drops in the waterbowls.. But I admit forgetting it at times.. |

Wha ha ha! That is sooo funny! I bet Cathy would need an isolated box: To keep Manu's screams INSIDE the box! LOL!
Also, it would have to be a chew proof one, given the fact that Manu chews his gyms down in no time! |

Kelly Anne, I think it helps clean the body system out by getting rid of bad stuff such as fungi... helps keep the body in good shape.
Cathy, was wondering how Manu is going with his coughing bout!! has he done it again since that day? I hope it's nothing to worry about... |
