| Manus "Call of the Wild"! |
|
|
Oh good Lord, it's as if my B & G has just recently discovered, or learned how to do his call of the wild thing! I'm not talking about the screaming noise, but that ear shattering, low pitched, full volumed
AAAAAAA Rawwwww
noise they make, I THOUGHT when they felt threatened by something. Does anyone know the noise I'm talking about?
I have heard him do it before, of course, but always when there was something he could see outside that probably did make him feel threatened. And he always quit right away when I would talk to him & calm him down.
Now he seems to be doing it all the time!! And for no apparent reason. I don't see anything that may be a threat to him anyway. I finally decided that perhaps he's doing it for attention. So I have tried ignoring it, after first checking that there's nothing in his view that might be bothering him, & closing all the windows in the house so the neighbors don't hear him & think I'm really hurting him! But he just keeps it up! Finally last night I had to cover his cage at about 7 Pm becuz I couldn't just sit there through it any longer!! He quieted right away.
He certainly doesn't seem sick in any way at all. Do you think perhaps it is just any attention getting thing? |

I think I know perfectly well what you mean, and it's very very loud!
Even with an isolated room (For sound) it's pretty loud!
I think it is vocalizing? But it may become a problematic behavior if dealt with it in a wrong way.
Can you distract him (WITHOUT LOOKING AT HIM!!!!) by closing a drawer, or dropping something, throwing something into the air (So that he'll be quiet) or anything else?
Then, when he's quiet, praise him..
You can have him step up after that..
Please make sure you're NOT looking at him, and don't distract him in the same way all the time.. (Else it might get worse!)
You can also start whispering with someone and, as he calms down, start to give him attention too. |

Oh, that's what I'm afraid of, it becoming problematic! I mean, I really don't mind it once in awhile, like if he really does see something that frightens him, I know it's a natural thing. But YIKES, I certainly hope it doesnt become persistant, such as simply an attention getter!
You know, tho, I am keeping a very close eye on him. Today his is more quiet than usual! And he's been staying in his cage, which just isn't real like him. I did take him outside earlier for a couple of hours, & he seemed like his normal self, but now, after I've brought him back in, he's quiet. Altho, this is his usual "nap time", as I call it. So I'm watching ... |

I understand you are afraid he'll continue to do this!
Does he eat? Does he drink? Please consult an avian vet if you suspect ANYTHING! Birds are masters in disguising illnesses..
Please don't watch him too closely.. Just from the corners of your eyes..
Please keep us updated!
By the way, I love the page you made! |

Thanks, I'm glad you like the page!
Yes, he is eating & drinking as normal, just quieter yesterday, tho maybe I just thought so because he had been carryng on so much the day before. For now I'll just continue to watch him closely.
You know, also, over the week-end hubby & I were gone a lot helping my sister get moved. I was gone the entire day Sat & until late afternoon Sun, so he had to stay inside his closed cage while we were gone, that just really never happens! I did take a long break each day & come home to talk to him & feed & water him & show him some attention & let him out a little bit. But I wonder if that's temporarily affected his behavior? |

Hi Sue! You know, Manu still does his call of the wild thing occasionaly, but not like he was for awhile! However, I DO think that he does use it as an attention getter, as I've noticed it now when I leave the room he will do it, but not with any persistance.
Unfortunately, I have given up on leaving him outside for any length of time. I was leaving him out for a few hours, trying to get him more used to, & not as threatened by the day to day comings & goings on in the neighborhood, but he just doesn't seem to be relaxing at all with it. I still take him out everyday, at a certain time, when things are quiet, but I only leave him out for about an hour. |

You know, I've noticed that Apollo is one scaredy bird! He doesn't like odd sounds, even if there's a car reversing outside. He goes into this panic mode. Crest up, and neck stretched as far and as high up as possible to listen to it He'll plaster himself on me when I take him outside because every little movements scares him!! |

Oh, that sounds just like Manu! He freaks out! He esp gets wound up if the dog starts barking at something! Manu doesn't really mind the noise that the dog makes, I don't think, but he just seems to associate Georges barking with something being wrong.
I have basically just come to accept that Manu will always be frightened in that way. I wonder if it would be different if I had spent more time taking him outside when I first got him? |

that's pretty cool if he does associate barking with bad stuff. Well sort of a cool thing anyway. Apollo just jump at everything that makes sound when he's outside! Even when he's inside he gets all wound up if he hears sometihng that he's not familiar with!
It may have made a different if you had taken him outside more when he was younger. it doens't seem to do anything for Apollo, he's still as skittish as ever!! He'll always be skittish I reckon when he's not inside his kingdom walls!!! LOL |
