New!!! Need nelp!!!  Reply with quote

Hi, my name is Dianna. I have a 13 year old B&G macaw, Jake. I've had him at the vet 5 days ago. Jake started vomiting this brown tobacco looking stuff for about 4 hours. Then whenever he drank water, he vomited just water. He drinks LOTS of water! Then vomits it up. The vet did xrays and saw something a little swollen in his stomach, I don't know the term. He found that he had a yeast infection too. He gave him baytril, nystatin, and an epsom salt solution. Jake eats VERY little. I give him his seed mixture and soft fruits and vegetables. He eats VERY little! He is sitting on his perch, but looks sad. I have an appointment with the vet later today. Does anyone have any idea why he's not getting better faster. I say faster, because he had the same symptoms years ago and the medicine took affect right away. Can anyone help? Thank you.

Hi, I don't know if I'm replying the correct way, but here goes. Thank you for your concern. Yesterday, the vet said Jake has lost weight since last week. He has started to eat more soft foods...enough to make his droppings have some consistency though. It was just watery before. He said the yeast infection went away, so I could discontinue the nystatin. But, that wasn't the vets main concern. It was the brown stuff he vomited up when he initially got sick. We came to the conclusion that Jake needs a new cage as he has been ingesting rust!!! There are a few spots on his old cage that he must've gotten to. So, the vet said to continue the baytril antibiotic, and the epsom salt solution to rid the body of heavy metal toxins. Oh, what made a huge difference, just overnight, was the vets suggestion that I give Jake Pedialyte instead of water. He loves it and it will put back the necessary nutrients back into his body from all the vomiting. He's still a sick bird, but looks a little bit more promiscing. Thank you again

Hi Dianna Polasek,

Sorry to hear about Jake Crying or Very sad

Our senegal parrot Iago had a powder-coated cage, from which he chewed of the coating. The result was that the bare metal core of the cage started to rust. Mad
They say that a powder-coated cage is parrot proof. I have seen that that is not the case. Even a senegal parrot can remove the coating. So for an even more powerful parrot as your macaw it would be easy. Confused

My girlfriend bought a stainless steel cage. It was very expensive, but no more rust Very Happy

I do not know your financial situation. But if you have the money to buy such a cage please do. To see your parrot this ill is horrible Crying or Very sad

I hopy that Jake will get better very soon Razz

Hi and thanks for your concern. Is Iago still in the powder coat cage, or did you buy a stainless steel one? I'm so glad you told me about the powder coat cage, as that is probably what I would've bought. Good day.

Hi Dianna,

Iago is in the stainless-steel cage. We still have the powder-coated cage, but only for backup. Laughing

Is it going any better with Jake Confused

Hi, well it seems he's not vomiting this Pedialyte like he did water. And, his droppings still have some consistency, so my fingers are crossed. Jake lives in his cage in the sun room, along with a happy little parakeet that I rescued some years ago. He had a stroke when I found him and he is paralyzed on one side. His name is Cooter. His cage is near Jake's. Cooter is a very happy little fellow and can get around great. However, I have his cage on the floor because he can't fly and I wouldn't want him to be high up and fall to the floor. He has full reign of the room. He walks around everywhere. I have a computer and TV in this room and I sit here most of the day watching everything Jake does so I can report it to the vet. Thanks for your concern.

I'm so glad to hear that Jake is doing better! It's the vomitting that would have had me very worried too.
So, does that mean a new cage is in Jakes near future?

Very nice to read about your little Cooter Very Happy Sounds like a very happy, lucky little guy!

Hi, this morning Jake seemed more upbeat. I gave him his meds and instead of giving him the usual apples, bananas, bran muffin, & whole wheat bread cut up in pieces, I decided to make a mush out of it, thinking it would be easier on his stomach to digest. He seems to like it this way. Fingers are crossed. I haven't given him the pedialyte in his water bowl yet. I have to wait an hour after giving him the meds so he doesn't throw them up. We'll have to go to the nearest large city, which is 65 miles away, to get a cage for him. They have several nice pet stores there. I hate to say this, but my husband and I are waiting to see if Jake makes it before we get the cage, toys, and etc. as it would take a huge chunk out of our budget. We wholeheartedly agree it will be well worth it if he survives. He is a very sick bird! Even the vet is very worried about him. I'll be sure to let you know of any changes. You all have been so supportive on this forum Have a great day!

I'll be keeping Jake in my prayers!
I realize that it's not good that he's lost weight in a weeks time, but the fact that he is beginning to eat better again is a good sign.
I wonder if you could possibly put some kind of coating on the rust spots of the old cage? At least temporarily anyway. You know, sand down the rusted spots & cover them with some kind of safe coating? That might be something you could ask the vet about.

Hi Dianna,

Good to hear that it is going better with Jake Very Happy

I totally agree with you, when you wait with buying a new cage. You can spend your money only once.

Can you tell us how many and how big the rust spots are on his cage.

Cover the rust spots as Cathy said is a good idea. Maybe you can cover the spots with something else (wood or some other nature product, non toxic).

Hi! You all are sooooooooo very nice! I'm happy to report that Jake did not vomit in a whole day and night! He is eating more, but not exactly like I like. However, my husband said he has been through a terrible illness, and it will just take a while. I agree, but am impatient and want him to be good as new. About the cage, although he is eating better, he has no interest in his cage at the moment. As I said before, I watch him most of the time and he hasn't made an attempt to chew on his cage. I realize I'm not with him all the time, but he is taking meds for binding heavy metals together and eliminating them quickly, so if he was to eat any rust, it would not be absorbed into his body. I told the vet I would be buying him a new cage if he survives. He said that Jake did not get sick as soon as he ate the rust as the body has ways of eliminating it. What happened is that small particles stuck to his insides and it slowly built up, perhaps over months, and just got too much for him, thus making him sick. I have thought of removing the rust some way, temporarily until I can get a new cage, like you all suggested, but thought that anything I could cover it with would just attract attention to it. Jake is sooooooooo curious whenever you put something out of the ordinary into his cage. Also, I want to keep his surroundings the same as not to excite him. Thank you so much for you concern. If Jake continue to improve today and tonight, we will be taking that trip tomorrow to get that new cage. I'll keep you informed about Jake's progress. Have a lovely day!

Hi Dianna,

Sorry that I respond so late. A week ago my PC decided that she needed to be replaced by a new one. Evil or Very Mad
There were also some other problems, which held me up so the new PC took some time. Confused

It is now a week later. How is Jake now doing? No more vomiting? How about his new cage?
I think your husband is right. If you have been very ill, you need time to get your strength back. The best to you and mostly to Jake Cool

We are so excited and I know Jake will be as well. Very Happy He'll also have some brand new toys to play with too. Very Happy He is talking again, and playing with his toys. Very Happy Oh, what a sight for us!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy His doctor wants to see him again in the middle of the week to check his weight. If he continues to eat like he is, the doctor will be amazed at how much he's gained. Thanks so much for your support and well wishes! Very Happy
