What kind of wood?  Reply with quote

I use manzanita wood for my B&Gs stand & perches as this is the only wood I've found that he can't chew through. Has anyone found anything other than manzanita that macaws can't easily chew through?

Hi Cathy.

I'm not sure about Macaw's chewing, but have you thought of the bottlebrush branches? They are soft on the outside but hard on the inside. Apollo chews through the outside, but the inside is still quite intact. He hasn't been able to chew through it as much. May be that might be ok for the macaws. Smile

I've never even heard of it before, where do you get it Cheeta?

I'd love to make Manu some kind of climbing stand of sorts, but made out of something that'll last him for more than a day!! I've seen the ones made with manzanita advertised on different places on the web, but they think awfully high of them!

You haven't heard of them. Oh right, that's why you haven't thought of using it!!! LOL.... Very Happy

Umm well there's a guy on the internet that sells the branches and stuff. Not sure what's the status is with him. but here's his website (if it's ok for me to post it here....) http://www.waynesparrotstuff.com

have a look and see what you find in it. Smile have fun.

Oh and bottlebrush is a native of Australia. I can get them basically everywhere. I have a tree in my front yard, so i just get bits and pieces from that. So much better then going out to get ready made perches/toys and stuff. Good luck with it. Smile

Cheers
Bih

Thanks Cheeta! There is some pretty neat stuff on there & the prices didn't look too bad, I'll have to check into it further.

No, I don't think I've ever heard of bottle brush before Embarassed

I always like to have wood available for him that he can chew up, but I do like to have at least a stand & a perch that will last him for awhile. Hubby has made a couple of stands out of PVC pipe, so they're light enough for me to carry from room to room, or outside when Manus has his harness on, but wood is just more natural & better looking.

Well I hadn't heard of manzanita until I started looking for parrots stuff on the net, and I was wondering what on earth they are!! So it's ok, we learn new things everyday. I'll see if I can take a photo of bottlebrush tree for ya later so you know what it looks like in a live stage, not just the dead branches!! LOL

Cheers

This is so mean of you guys.. I wanted to mention the bottlebrush site (Wayne) and at the same I time I became a little sad..
I have approached Wayne quite some times to get bottlebrush toys to Europe. He just won't do it.. Sad The shipping costs are too high, he says.. Sad
So no bottlebrush for me.. Crying or Very sad

And Bih, you're even more lucky as you can get it anywhere.. I really feel left out booohoooo! Crying or Very sad

Hi Sue

So sorry to hear that you can't get the bottlebrush stuff in Europe. Just wondering can you get the live plant in like nurseries and stuff?? may be you can look into planting it. Smile They don't take very long to grow. Smile
Although I'm not sure if the weather would be suitable or not for the bottlebrush in Netherlands. Sad

I can always grow it inside the house.. Or try to!

LOL. well you can try to grow it inside the house, but I can't imagine it would grow too big! Or at least you wouldn't want to let it grow too big in the house anyway!!! LOL

Anyway species of Bottlebrush is fine. Apollo loves the little seed/nuts thing that form after flowering! That's the first thing that he goes for wherever I put in a fresh branch! He just love it! If you're thinking of using the branches as perches, I would probably choose a non-weeping bottlebrush species for obvious reason!!

Hmmm, I think it won't get the chance to grow big if I let Iago, Zazu & Flit on it.. It would be minimized within.. Well, fast! Smile

What's a non-weeping bottlebrush species? (Sorry!)

Sorry, I should have made it clearer... some bottlebrush tree are the weeping kind, where the branches kinda just flop to the side, like those weeping willows kinda tree. The branches aren't hard like a normal tree.
Basically you need those hard branches for perches otherwise well it just wouldn't work. Although those weeping bottlebrush are the best looking bottlebrush trees in my opinion!! And it produces the most nuts after flowering!!! Smile

If you end up getting a bottlebrush tree, you'd need hard armour around the tree constantly for it grow big!! Yeah I can imagine how fast it'd be minimized otherwise!! LOL. They would have a blast!!!

Thanks for explaining things to me.. Smile

I think I'd want it to grow BIG so it can meet my fids' need for chewing.. Smile
