They look like owls! Are they related to the raptors?

They are closely related to nightjars: http://montereybay.com/creagrus/nightjars.html They don't have the large claws that owls have and they hunt with their beaks instead of their claws.

I hope I get to see them in the wild too while I'm in Australia. Heart

I hope so shirin! I've been trying to look on the web for a map of Aus with where frogmouths are located.. but so far nada, all I keep getting is general info pages about frogmouths Rolling Eyes I know they lived around my homeplace SE QLD, but I don't know about WA - hopefully Cheeta will know Smile

BTW, they are very hard to spot! They like to sit very still and imitate broken branches, and they're very good at it. The only thing that will give them away is a feather caught in the wind Smile

The species I used to see were the Tawny Frogmouths. My husband was lucky to see one when he was visiting Aus. a few years ago, I think she was teaching her fledgling to fly, because we found the baby not far away (of course we only looked and didn't get too close) it was a great experience Smile
