I too have a picky TAG parrot,7months old. I feed Zupreem Pellets [fruit blend] just eats certain colours, but would eat lots of Hagen Tropimix. I make up a brown rice&bean mix. Some days wont touch the next day might eat 2 beans 1 piece of rice.I feel what he eats is not a balanced diet. What he will eat is grapes, oranges, apple, broccoli,gr.beans, banana& sometimes carrots. The Harrison food sounds good. I need advice. I hope I don't get mark on my grammer. Thanxs Pam-Canada I sure hope I did this right. |

Hi Pam! Welcome to fluffies Sounds like you're doing great with the diet. The Tropimix is a pretty good brand of pellets, I used to feed my Grey that before I switched to Harrison's. But when I did switch, I totally noticed a difference in her colouring and feather condition, so I would say if you can afford it, definitely give Harrison's a try. Where in Canada are you? I get mine from a vet in Oakville, cuz it's not sold in stores.
As far as the coloured zupreem, I wouldn't recommend it. I know when you go to a pet store they sort of push it on you like it's an essential part of their diet (Super Pet is notorious for this) But the artificial colours and perservatives used in these coloured pellets are bad for birds. They can cause allergic reactions and feather chewing. It's basically just a waste of your money.
Beans, rice, vegetables, and fruits are all great. Just make sure that the beans aren't canned, because canned foods contain a lot of sodium. Fruits should be offered as treats, because of their high sugar content which can cause moodiness. And as far as grapes, make sure they're not a product of Chile, because there have been cases of birds dying from consuming grapes from Chile. I think it has something to do with the amount of pesticides they use. You can also offer nuts such as almods or macadamia nuts as speacial treats. |

Hi Pam
Welcome to Fluffies.
What's your TAG's name? Anychance of any photos? We are pics mad here on this forum.. hehe.
With Chilian's grape, it was because it contained mould/fungi that is deadly for parrots and harmful even to humans.
Your diet sounds pretty good to me... Although a lot of people would disgaree with me here, but I think a bit of seeds also helps a long way. though Sunflower seeds should be kept to a minumum like on training or as rare treats. I live in Australia.. I don't have access to Harrison, but I have heard many many good things about them being the best pellets around. shirin has already given you some very good pointers. |
