| funny little bug in food |
|
|
I had to throw out the food the breeder gave me because there were some funny litte bugs in there can anyone tell me/show me what a seed moth I guess larvae looks like? the "bugs" I had were about 1-2 cm long I recon and kind of looked like a cross between a worm and a maggot. I could see one "hatching" I guess in a kind of silk/cotton/fluff like cocoon nest thing. I am sorry I don't have any pics I discovered them around 10 at night and I didn't take any pics I just tossed all the food. They were in the seeds and the pellets. I threw away the millet she gave me for good measure, and also because I already had some can you tell me if you think they were seed moths, or some other weird thing and I should abandon my room and set it on fire or have it gassed or something j/k about destroying my room |

They're common unfortunately. I don't usually feed seed, but the brand I use when I get it is Volkman. Look for it online or at some bird shops. It is fairly pricey for seed, but it is the only 100% "clean" seed I know of. |

actually you're not wrong about seed moth taking over!!! they took over my previous home, and boy let me tell ya, they get into EVERYTHING!! The best way to prevent this is when you first get the seeds, put them in your freezer for a couple of days, this will kill off any unhatched eggs. seriously those little worms aren't that bad for birds if only a small amount of the whole pack of seeds aren't destroy, I still give those the my birds if I notice that the worm has just started. mind you I give the ones that's 'off' to my chickens... they love little wormy maggots thing!! LOL |

Geez Bih, I guess I've never had so much seed that it got out of hand! I guess it could if you have a lot of seed or grain.
I HATE maggots and any larva! It is one thing I just can't handle!! |

They took over my house too, why do you guys think I'm moving?
No, but seriously, there was a time when my laundry room was FILLED with them, I think I even made a thread about it here. It was my fault though, they grew in a tupperware of wild bird seed that I had and hadn't closed properly. |

Once, it was A LONG TIME AGO I had a roommate who didn't have birds, but he still had moths and maggots in his pantry... they were from grains and old cereal and dry food like that. He must not have sealed the packages good enough before putting them away. It was so gross! |

well thankfully no more are being seen! I did put the new bag of seeds and for good measure the pellets in the fridge I guess If I thought about it I could have given the "things" to my pond fish, but I wasn't thinking and anyway I HATE touching that kind of stuff either with fingers or transporting them on anything else |

hehe... those things can take over the world if given the right condition and plenty of food!! LOL. kidding.
Cy, did you only put the seeds and pellets in the fridge? I would suggest actually putting them in the freezer. I keep my mill worms in the fridge, they stay alive!! |
