| Harrisons pellets |

Ok, so i found harrisons here in Belgium.
It is bleeding expensive at 65 Euro for 5lbs bag so someone is making premium money on those.
Anyway I was wondering what kind to take for my sennie
HIGH POTENCY COARSE or HIGH POTENCY FINE.
Also how long can i expect a 5 Lbs bag to last ? |

That's extremely expensive!
But with a Sennie, the bag will last a long time. I'd keep it in the freezer.
When I had a Sennie, cockatoo & lovebird that bag lasted 2,5 months.
I have the high potency coarse. If you wish, you can always squish the pellets a bit. -> The HPC ingredients are right for a Sennie. |

Well that it with postage (8 euro and 5 euro handeling fee)
Bag alone is like 45 euro if i'dd go and pick it up but its 130 km from here so it would cost me more then getting it send.
But I you can make it last 2.5 month then one sennie should do half a year.
making it cheaper then seeds |

I believe Harrison't is supposed to be used up within 4-6 weeks, because they don't use preservatives. I think 6 months might be pushing it a bit, even if it is refrigirated It might be better if you bought maybe several 1 pound bags. So you don't have to open that huge amount all at once. |

Good thinking, I was figuring I would freeze most of it in packets and then use the packets as we go, but buying small bags might actualy be more sensible |

Small bags are VERY expensive. Don't you know people who use Harrison as well? You might want to share a bag! |

Well i did some calculations and actually not as bad as it looks.
I pay about 7 euro for a seed mix with added vitamins and stuff, then we have to sort all the sunflower seeds out of it manually.
One bag lasts about a month so that comes down to 7euro/month
Add to that the daily fresh fruit and veg and i'll easily top 10 euro/month.
No HBF will cost me 61 euro for (43 euro for the bag rest is postage and handling ) 5lbs, quick calculation based on recommended maximum daily portion shows it will last me about 6 months (yes I'll need to freeze most of it in small bags).
So that comes down to 10 euro/month + some fruit and veg, but i wont be giving a daily portion any more since i know he will be on a balanced diet.
So I figure that HBF will cost me about 1-2 euro's more a month then seeds.
(it will be a lot more expensive then other pellet diets, or cheap basic feed diet) |

I used to buy (I donīt serve pellets anymore) the large bags with Harrisonīs too and I froze it. Just remember not to freeze it in the pellets bag, use a bag that is made for freezing, otherwise the pellets may be ruined by moisture and get mouldy.
I bought the size "fine", when I bought "coarse" my parrots used the pellets as toys and everything ended up on the floor. |

Can I ask why you stopped with pellets ? and what do you feed now ?
I am not the biggest supporter of pellets myself, but after months of searching I just cant find any parrot seed mix that doesn't contain at least 40% sunflowers. And when the sennie all of a sudden started eating Nutribird pellets and would not touch his seed any more I decided to switch him completely to pellets. |

I stopped with pellets because I belive itīs not the best food. Pellets mostly contain grains, soy beans and artificial vitamins and minerals and itīs boring, especially for intelligent animals as parrots.
Now I feed a mix of vegetables and fruits (mostly veggies) and soaked or sprouted seeds and beans. As treats and entertainment (foraging toys) I serve dry seeds and nuts. Sometimes my parrots get some of the food that we humans eat, a piece of pasta, some rice, a chicken bone etc. I feed them twice a day and sometimes they get a snack (a piece of fresh fig, a papaya, an almond or something like that). When they are in their cage when Iīm at work I put some snack in some of their foraging toys.
Yes, itīs hard to find a good seed mix, usually I buy a seed mix for smaller parrots (parakeet mix) without sunflower seeds. |

The HBF pellets arrived today
Teach loves them ....
as toys
As soon as I replaced the old pellets with HBF he went to it, and startid playing with them after a minute he found that if he trows them it makes noise so the next 5 minutes where spend towing pellets around and me picking them up
I broke them down in smaller pieces and now he is eating some more and throwing less. So i guess that is progress |

Yeah, I don't think you can ever expect parrots not to throw their food My Bunny throws A LOT of her pellets on the floor too Or like she takes a couple of bites, then throws the rest down to go get a new one. But yeah, crushing them does result in less waste. |
