| he won't eat fruit! |
|
|
Sonnie takes food from me willingly...but only if it's his favorite treats, or pasta and bread...I can't, for the life of me, get him to try ANY fruit....he won't even get near it...
how can I get him to TRY it....
he probably would like it very much.

Have you tried eating it yourself in front of him, and when he gets curious pretend like you won't share with him. Or if any of your other birds like to eat fruit, let him watch you feeding them the fruit and he'll get jealous and want some too. They usually always want what the can't have |

Hi Lynzi, please don't worry about not eating fruit. It isn't that big of a deal. Veggies are better for him anyway.. I have read that parrots don't need vitamin C only when in stressy conditions or when they're ill?? |

Everybirdie in our house is picky about everything except pasta as well, although once one likes something the others seem to follow suite (even though Dewey doesn't identify with the budgies, oh no!).
The budgies are finally eating some vegetables and apple, and Dewey loves apple and grape and finally learned to try some pear when we got it from the CSA a few weeks ago. We find that we are more successful with him if the fruit is cut in a wedge-shape which he can hold in his foot like a little club and chew on. It seems as though presenting new fruits in the same manner as fruits he would already eat helps. We also always give them new food treats in the same little dish, so they get curious when they see the dish at at least come to look at the new food. If it is really scary, we sprinkle some seeds on. The vet says that if they are picking seeds off if it, at least they are getting a little bit of the nutrients, and they are also gradually learning to accept it as "food".

Some bird just don't eat somethings, just like people, Amy my RLA will only eat carrots and red peppers, for over two years we have tried everything. Still she leaves it all in her dish execpt for carrots and red peppers... (Stuborn Old Bird) SOB...

where do you put the fruit? If she (or he?) doesn't identify it as a food source for her, putting some in her bowl might help her to understand. Unless she's alreday taken a nibble, and decided she doesn't like it.
I found with Snoop that cutting the fruit into small, beak-bite pieces helped encourage her. |

Berto didn't like fruit for awhile either, then I got these dried apples and strawberries from Henry's. They're organic and by gerber, and he LOVES them. I have the bag sitting on my desk and whenever I take it out to feed him some he starts climbing down and tries to eat out of the bag. There's also banana-mango ones that I haven't tried yet, but your Sonnie might like those better than apples and strawberries.
