How do I know.....  Reply with quote

...if she's eating on her own?

The breeder said that she is, but she wants to be hand fed constanly by me.

There's food on the bottom of her cage, does that mean she's getting in the bowl?

And if I try to hand feed her something other then her weaning sticks, she spits it out.

Thanks guys!!!

I think that if there is stuff on the floor then shes getting to the bowl, but its hard to tell if shes eating it or just pushing it around, then out!!

When i first bought harley home i would weigh the food before i put it in the bowl then at the end of the day, when he had finished with it. This way i could kinda tell how much he was eatting, but then again if some of its going on the floor then it would be lighter!!! omg how silly am i?

Well at least i tried!!!

Sorry Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

Oh, thanks Michelle, but I'm certainly no expert Embarassed !
It is hard to know for sure if they're really eating, or just fooling you, unless you can actually watch them eat. And I know that's hard to do, becuz a lot of times they stop eating when you walk in the room!
You might want to find some kind of scale you can use to weigh her on a daily basis. One that measures in grams. I finally got one, but it's too small for Manu, so I ended up taking it back & have to get another one.

One way that youc an make sure that he's eating is to to feel for his crop. if your baby eats, her crop will have some sort of content in there. Feel for it. The easier way to find the crop is follow the keel bone up towards the neck area.. when you get to the 'v' indent bit, that's where the crop is located. press down gentley on it. If there's a large amount of food in there you'll be able to feel it easier. If there's only a small amount, you'll still be able to feel for it, just have to press down a little deeper. but still gentley of course.

In my opinion, you should keep giving her the weaning stuff until she refuses it. Alot of cockatoo when they get home they regress, and that's when you have to re-wean them yourself again. I had to do that with my cockatoo, and he was like that up till three to four months after he came home. He still gets warm food first thing in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon when I get home from work, and once again before he goes to bed. I spoilt him rotten at times!!! LOL
Good luck with your little one and keep us posted with how she's going.
