Hi there, welcome to this forum and please DON'T feel like a bad pet owner at all. Some of us have had birds our whole lives and yet we still continue to learn new things every day. Pellets should be the main diet for your birds, as they provide most of their nutritional needs, are easy if you have no time to cook or remove fresh food after 4 hours, and are 100% edible and have no waste as seeds do (although if your birds are anything like mine they probably love throwing food around ) However not all pellets are made the same and some have poisonous ingredients, please read this topic:
http://www.fluffies.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=218
Pellets that are certified as organic and contain no harmful perservatives are ideal. Also watch out for salt or sugar or artificial colour as a listed ingredient. My birds were also on Hagen's tropican pellets, but i recently switched them to Harrison's, it was recommended by my avian vet. It's not sold anywhere in Toronto, but I found a veterinary clinic in Oakville that sells it.
Please make sure the fruits and vegetables that you feed are also organic, as pesticides do kill birds. And as far as peanutbutter (maybe you already know this ) regular peanutbutter has a high content of refined sugar and hydrogenated oil, but you can buy all natural peanutbutter with the only ingredient being roasted peanuts from a health food store, or Dominion. Nuts shouls be given only as treats because they are really fattening. Table food also should be given on occasion as a special treat.
Where are you moving to (I'm also from Toronto)? Have you found an avian vet close to your new town? |

No need to feel bad.As i was reading your post i was thinking of my very frist bird.(poor thing) i did not know the frist thing about what a bird needed. I have owned birds for many years now and im always learning more about them and their diet. The important thing is you are now learning and will be able to give them what they need. |

Like it has been mentioned, don't feel like you're a bad pet owner. We all learn as we go in life!!! To be honest, my first pet bird I had was only on seeds!!!! well you can imagine how bad it would have been for my bird. At least you fed yours all pellets which should be their main diet anyway.
As with feeding them other fresh stuff.. You can pretty much give them what you eat with exception of avacadoes, raw onions, coffee (or anything with caffeine in it), and I'm pretty sure raw lentils as well. The most nutritious of fresh veggies are their sprouts. Most birds would kill for them. so you can give that a try as well.
Nuts are good, especially macadamias (they so very expensive here in Australia - roughly $35AUD per Kilograms!!!!) , But they are very fatty, so like it was said, only in moderation!!
As with wing clipping, I can explain to you how to do it, but you might want to go to someone with avian expertize to show you how it's done. Take you bird either to an avian vet, and a special bird dealer, or someone who knows how to do it PROPERLY... get them to clip the bird wings for you while you watch. Ask question when you're not sure what they are doing. That's the best way I have found to learn to clip wings.
Once you've learn how to clip them, the next time you go and clip your bird, I would advice to do it slowly. Meaning, one feathers on each wing every couple of days. So that the bird doesn't feel too intimidated that all of a sudden it can't fly anymore. so basically it's a gradual process of them loosing the flight ability.
Oh a proper clip should be one that stills allow the bird to glide to the ground safely if for some reason it is startled, and decides to take off. This ensures that the bird won't bruise or hurt themself in the process, which may lead to future problems like plucking.
I hope I made sense. Take care

Welcome here!
Can I ask what tropican is?
Please don't feel like a bad pet owner. You're here right? That proves something! You're looking for info!
Please try to find a substitute for peanuts as they can contain some molts..
Here's a photo of my birds' wings:
But I'd seek professional help (avian vet) to have your birdsclipped for the first time.
I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself.. |

PS I would suggest too that you read through the entire "Diet" forum here, there's a wealth of info on there!
AND be SURE to ask the vet LOTS of questions when you take them for their wing clipping |

Hey Blossom,
I did the same thing!! I would post and forget where I had posted it. That was also until I found the 'post since last visit' button. So very helpful.
Yes please do let us know how your trip went at the scarbrough town centre.
I'm also glad to hear that your sennies are trying out new veggies and are actually eating them already!! Some birds take a long time to take a liking to fresh food ! You're very lucky!
I agree with you that birds are great and they are absolutely wonderful. They are a real charm. I can't imagine ever living with birds in my life again. |

yes shirin .. i realized that it wasnt susam after i posted
wow thats great , i will get some pellets this weekend coming and the best thing we can visit my hubbys grandfather he lives in oakville he is 87 how lucky to live that long ,my hubby and i were 40 when we got the senigals and they stressed they would live a long time and that i would have to be sure they had a home after i go ........lmao my hubby will probably outlive them hehehe.
funny thing sammy he throws all his food to bottom of cage and when susie see;s me on the toilet she does this dance and picks up nuts and starts throwing them over her head (only when im on the can lol)
so i read a post about spraying them so i got the water bottle and spray them now once a week .i show suzie the bottle and she runs so funny ,but sammy starts flickering his eyes and he just loves it .
they have been bathing in their water bowls but since i started spraying them they havent done that ...
do u all use bows , or is there a better way to make sure they keep their water clean it seems to me they throw everything in the water bowls and by morning its grose and stinks ?
this winter might be amazing i am going to get a mating box ,but im not confident enough yet so ill just hang tight , i would love to mate them would be a wounderfull thing to wittness ,but im not sure i want an extra 4 senigals in the house lol
i have talked to a few people who would be willing to take one for free but i am scared id give them a bad home its not the same when u pay over 1k verses free ....but im thinking i wont be able to let got they are just cute lol

Hi Blossom, make sure when you go to the clinic to ask either the vet or one of the girls that work there (they're vet students, ot techs) which kind of the pelets they recommend for your bird.
You're thinking about breeding your senegals? Oohhh I want a baby!!!! I'm so jealous of everyone here talking about their senegals, they seem like so much fun It is amazing to watch babies being hatched, I had doves that I let mate. They layed 2 eggs, and I watched them raise the babies until they grew all their feathers.. it was so cute. |
