| Is Chicken Bad? |
|
|
My Senny may eat 5 pellets a day! He is a finicky eater. I recently tried Chicken and he liked it! He's a canabal!!! Since he is not getting much protein from the pellets will the chicken supplement? I get him to eat broccoli, and sweet potato. I make this for him in the evening. I tried the green been carrot, corn mix. He barely eats a couple peas. I recenty tried crush pinapple and he liked that. Other wise his fruit habits was only grapes. He will eat nutri-berries but I noticed he was just eating the white seed in the entire ball!! He gets a millet spray every couple of days and two grapes a day. Those are his favorite. He just seems like he doesnt eat that much. My neighbors recenlty got a Quaker and compared to what that Quaker eats my Senny eats like a bird! ha ha... I keep Zupreem pellets (natural and fruit blend) in his cage at all times. He will go all day without touching them. He will nibble every once in a while. Im afraid to just leave him with those pellets, fearing he will starve himself. Any suggestions out there? He came from a pet store which fed him a seed mix. Guess what he ate? Sunnflower seeds! He is 17 mos old. I have had him for 6 months now. Thanks for your time. |

Hi Pizansmom
I personally do not recommend chicken. According to a report from the USDA, 98 percent of chicken carcasses are contaminated with E. coli bacteria by the time they reach the market, largely because of the filthy conditions in the sheds where they are raised. They are fed large quantities of antibiotics to keep them alive in conditions that would otherwise kill them. Chickens are also pumped full of hormones to make them grow faster and larger. There are lots of ways to feed your sennie protein without having to resort to feeding him other birds flesh. Legumes such as chic peas, and beans are packed with nutrition and are high in protein. Nuts and seeds in moderation are also a good source of protein.
Grapes are fine as treats, just make sure they're not a product of chile, because grapes from chile were found to have some bacteria in the flesh that was causing illness.
I would also stop feeding the coloured pellets, they are high in sugar, perservatives and artificial colours, and are basically a waste of money. They offer no benifit and are actually harmful to your bird.
Your sennie is still very young and it's easier to expose him to different foods and getting him used to them. It takes some patience, but don't give up. It took me 6 months to convert my lovebirds onto pellets, but I did it |

Smokey (CAG) loves chicken but Pickles (Sennie) won't eat it at all. I don't think it's bad to feed as long as it's well cooked. Will he eat apple? Pickles most favorite thing is "Delcious" apple. Doesn't like MacIntosh and most other kinds, but loves Delicious, or "Golden Delicious". Have you tried Kiwi? Pickles won't eat strawberries but loves Kiwi. Stange to me since I find the flavors similar. Also, have you tried Snap peas in the pods? Pickles loves them as well as whole raw string beans. He prefers all his food raw as opposed to cooked. I also found my guys don't like fruits right out of the refrigerator when they're cold. They love orange but only when it's at room temperature. Spoiled little fids.
As for pellets, Pickles loves the Zupreem fruit blend but also likes Harrison's pellets. If you haven't tried them yet you might want to give them a try. I think they're one of the best pellets available. Pickles and Smokey both eat them readily.

just a suggestion ... you could try crushing up the pellets and putting them into something that he does like .... you could also try the bird mashes, and again you could crush up the pellets and throw them into it ... I will only give Focker seed as a treat, and he gets a very small amount ... its so easy for them to become addicted to seed ... Focker eats alot of the bird mashes .... I recently tried the Scenic Jungle Mix Pellets and he went right for them, in fact, he loves them over his other pellets ... another favourite pellet of Fockers are the Pretty Bird Natural Gold ... they are the best smelling pellets I've smelt so far ... or else you could possibly try putting a very small amount of peanut butter on his pellets ... I've noticed that there are certain pellets that Focker just doesn't like the shape of ... as far as the fruit zupreem goes around here, all Focker will eat are the orange balls and he throws the rest at the dog ... you said he likes sweet potato, maybe you could make up sweet potato balls for him ... I make them up for Focker and I toss everything but the kitchen sink into them, freeze them, and then just microwave them as I need them ... you could crush pellets up, put in some dry oatmeal, a banana, broccoli, and some fruit, basically anything can go into them ... just cook the potato first, and then mash it and start tossing stuff into the bowl ... if the pellets are crushed your bird will have no way in avoiding eating them ... good luck |

Hi,
Chicken I believe is not bad, Almost all of our birds love what ever meat we are having, Chralie (YNA) will even crack open the bones to get the marel (sp) out.
The Pettels? keep it up, time is on your side. Our Dawn was a breeder bird, sunflower seed is all she got for years (thats what the Vet thinks). But now little over a year later she will eat the Yellow Zupreen only?
They all love mash potatoes. This is how we get thier Vitiams in them. We make a big batch of mash potatoes, freeze little cookie size drops of mash potatoes on a cookie sheet. Then in the morning we warm them up and place it on top of thier fresh food. We pearsonl think it reminds them of when they were babies.
They don't eat every thing, sometimes it takes a year before they venture trying a new food. You are doing the right thing. What ever you eat they will more then likly eat. It is a socail event for them, if they see you eating it then they will eat it, that is how they learn what to eat in the wild, they watch the other members of the flock..We have at lest one set down meal with or birds every day.. (There is a list of foods that you should not feed them, the list is short on on this site in a number of places)

I do give my sennie well cooked chicken ocasionally, & as Shirin mentioned, legumes are also a good source of protein. I also give her scrambled eggs about 3 times a week, mixed with mixed frozen veggies, & she loves it.
I make a batch of mix that I feed to all my birds pretty much daily:
boil a bag of 15, or 17 bean mix for about 30 minutes, then add a bag of egg noodles & boil for an additional few minutes. Rinse thoroughly & store in freezer bags. Serve it warm with some veggies mixed in. My birds eat it real well! |

Apollo LOVES his chicken leg bones.... he'll BEG for it if he sees us eating chicken drumstick! I give him a bone on occasions. Too much protein isn't good for parrots anyway. Soemthing to do with the digestive system. I try not to give any of my budgies or cockatoo too much proteins. |

My budgie was fussy with his nutriberries when we first started feeding him that too. He would eat all the seeds except the little white ones!! Eventually I tried feeding him a few seeds by hand, and then gave him a white one, then a few more of them. He has been eating all of them since Maybe your little guy doesn't realise those are good to eat and needs to be showed?? |

To those who feed nutriberries, just be careful to check the ingredients, because nutriberries used to contain ethoxyquin, and some stores may still have ones with the old recipe on the shelves. |

I sometimes give Zazu some chicken.. I choose to feed him some chicken and other meat because in the wild he feeds on larvae. It's quite a large amount of his daily meal thus I think he'll miss something with just veggie stuff. I do cook the meat very well and I also use free-range meat. (For myself too, since a short while)
Too much fruit is not very good for birds.. It can be the cause of yeast in their digestive tract. (According to my avian vet) |

Shirin,
Since you brought to light the way they commercially raise chicken, it makes me not want to eat it... ah, until I think about the delicious chicken I get Persian style haha! Also, I love Terriyaki chicken, and chicken prepared in almost any way!! I just can't go without my chicken! Maybe I should start buying it at the health food store instead? Free range like Sue?
I don't feed it to my birds... the chicken is all for me!

Julie, if you can buy free range chicken for your home cooking it would be great same with eggs. It's also healthier for you too |

My CAG eats chicken every time he sees me eating it. He knows what it looks like and will start to beg until I give him some. As long as its cooked I see nothing wrong with chicken. |
