nuts ok for rainbow lorries?  Reply with quote

Hi,
Just wondering if it is ok to feed my rainbow lorrie nuts? And if so what types do you suggest? Also is cuttlefish or those chewable vitamin perches ok for them? He seems to love eating my cockatiels. Thanks for your help. I'll post some photo's of him soon.

Hi fi, it's good to see another person with a rainbow lory here Very Happy. I think nuts in small quantities are generally okay for them, they should never be a significant part of their diet though. My rainbow loves most types of seeds, but since they're not good for him I only give him tiny little parts as treats when I'm training him.
Cuttlefish are also good for them, mine loves to chew on it and it does a good job at keeping his beak and nails trimmed. In fact they *should* be given a cuttlebone Smile. I don't know about the vitamin perches, I've never used those.
Hope this helps, and I'll be looking forward to seeing a photo of your bird Smile

Hi fi,nuts like Koukouvagia said is okay just in small amounts.Nuts in all parrots should be limited for their fat content, depending on size and activity the bird has it varies.Unsalted is a must and not fried, shelled peanuts great for they enjoy breaking them, then enjoying what's inside.Mylo has as a treat two standard unsalted peanuts in the afternoon.Look forward to seeing some photo's Very Happy

heh, I'm not sure if all lorikeets are like this, but mine never seems to bite hard on his food.. which means that if I give him a nut in its shell he won't be biting hard enough to crack the shell! My guess is because lorikeets are used to chewing soft things like flowers instead of cracking nuts open, but it's just a guess. I definitely agree with the unsalted and unfried parts though Smile

Mine used to eat the big nutra-puffs (puffed vitamin treats) they would play with them first though, the scaly used to hold them with his feet while sitting on his bottom on the floor Laughing

They look like cheese puff chips, they are a vitamin treat, they are different colours and flavours, some pet stores have them.

Hi Fi, and welcome to this forum Smile I hope you enjoy your time here! (now we have 2 Fi's Very Happy )

As everyone has mentioned, unsalted (preferably organic) nuts are okay, but in very small amounts, as special treats. Macadamia nuts and Almonds offer the best nutritional value, peanuts aren't as nutritious, but for some reason all birds seem to go crazy for thm Rolling Eyes

As far as the Vitamin Perch, if it's what I think you're talking about, then I don't think they're good because usually they have artificial colour, which isn't very good for them (I might be wrong about what I think vitamin perches are, so feel free to correct me Razz )

Please tell us more about your bird! Can't wait to see pictures!

Hi Fi

Welcome to the forum. I too hope you enjoy your stay here with us.

My mom has a rainbow too, but she's not into solid food, meaning anything that requires her to chew, she prefers not to eat it. She licks everything, and that's the only way that she'll eat!! her dry mix, her fruits, and nectar.. she uses her tongue for all her food requirement!
Like everyone say, just the same as all other birds, nuts in moderations is ok for her if she'll eat it.
What's your lory's name? How old is it? I can't wait to see some pic of it!! Smile

Cheers
Bih

Thanks for all your advice. My Lorries name is Pilot and his best buddie is Percy the very grumpy white faced cockateil. I've had Pilot for a couple of months now and he is absolutely hilarious. He climbs anything he can find and takes big leaps from place to place, usually only just making the landing by the skin of his talons Shocked He gets pretty happy with himself though since Percy cant copy. But when I carry him about he acts like a perfect gentleman and just sits there and behaves himself. So I took him outside for the first time yesterday. (his wings are clipped) He loved it. Didn't freak out about anything and took it all in his stride. Even stopped to talk to a lady and her dog and little kids. Then off to the shops. He charmed everyone. He's such a flirt.

As for Percy, I think he would have to be the hardest bird to tame in the world. He's such a pretty bird though. dark steel grey with a pure white head and a white stripe down his wings. He didn't have his wings clipped when I got him and I haven't done it but I think I am finally going to have to succum. He is to independent and just wants to do his own thing. The only time he really seems to enjoy it with me is in the shower. he hops right under the water on my hand. Loves it. cant get enough. Has anyone else found that Tiels love water? He's the 3rd one I've had now that just love being in the shower. Pilot just sits on the shower rail has a steam bath. He prefers to jump in his water bowl and make a huge mess.

Anyway enough babbling for now, I will write more when I have some photo's. Thanks again

Don't nuts have a good deal of protein? from what I understand you need to keep the protein (and iron) down for lories, But I'm sure that it's fine in moderation as long as you watch the overall protein and iron in the diet.
