We where given nuttrriberries and avicake samples (and harrisons) my bird hated harrisons but liked nutrriberries and avicakes, like I said avicakes are a very special treat. For BOTH conure and budgie. What is writen above is about the budgie(Cookie)
Well I don't know what avicakes are, but nutriberries for sure are junk food, and should be given only as treat, if at all. Why don't you just feed your budgie seeds, and supplement it with vegetables? |

What I ment is that I must pay for all bird things, because the bird is mine only andI take full responsability for her. Harrisons IS expensive, although I have no doubt that it is the best for your bird. Any suggestions on what diet I should go with for now?? |

An only seed diet is not sufficient, but in my opinion seeds are a lot healthier for budgies than nutriberries as a main diet. Perhaps you can have seed as their main diet, supplemented with vitamins in their water, while at the same time continuing to try to feed the veggies.
Also keep in mind, when your vet tries to sell you the foods they have there, he's trying to make money. Vets don't always give the best advice as far as diet. Just like when you go to the doctor, the doctors always try to push unnecessary medication on people. For example my vet tried to get me to switch all my doves over to a pelleted diet, but the truth is that an all pelleted diet would have made my doves sick, because it would be too much protein for them. So basically do a lot of research on diet yourself, and come to an informed decision yourself, because vets sometimes are just thinking about making a profit.
When you say that your budgie hated veggies, did you try offering them in every possible way? For example, raw, steamed, cooked, finely chopped, ect? Also, how long did you try before you gave up? I know birds can be very picky eaters, but with some persistence you will be successful. It took me about 6 months to convert my lovebirds onto pellets, that's how defiant they were, but I did it.
Anyway, hopefully Cheeta will be along soon and give you more advice. She has over 20 budgies, and knows a lot about their dietary requirements. |

Harrisons is way less expensive than it is in Europe. In Europe, compared to the States, it's like 2,5 times the prize. Apart from that, a budgie won't eat much. I think a bag of 1 pound will last like 3 months? |

Sveta, like Sue said, budgies don't eat much, so small bag will last a while.
I'm not sure about conures, but my budgies (all 24 of them) do not eat pellets. Instead they get top quality seeds, and a mixed variety of green veggies leaves most the time, and with carrots and corns. Iceburg lettuce and celeries are useless as they are just full of moistures, try for gormet lettuces and also those bok choy, or choy sum (asian green veg). My budgies would kill for those. And another thing I do for my budgies is actually sprouting the budgies seeds into grass and feed them that (still growing in it's tray/containers. You grow them like you would with wheat grass, and when it gets to about three inches high, I pop the whole thing in the cage/aviary and let them mow it down. another thing that they love is brocolli, but not all love to eat it. some still flatly refuse to go near it, but most pick off the little floriet to eat.
Just curious, did you get the harrison pellets crumbles or actual small pellets? Budgies won't eat anything that is big and chunky for them. |

oh I forgot, with vitamins and all that, you can always get supplements to coat the seeds with. I haven't done that, but my friends who show breeds does that fairly regularly. also make sure they get enough minerals, get them those mineral blocks. |

I was just looking at the ingredients to Harrisons(I use them) and only 11 out of 26 are Certified Organic. I guess the reason that they can have the label USDA ORGANIC is because the 11 ingredients = 95% of the ingredients. I never realized that they weren't 100% organic. I was just thinking about changing to Roudybush to save a little money but now I have to do more research. Thanks for the info

I was rather dissappointed with he Harrison's although I still feed them it. I read on their website how the birds beaks are supposed to stop pealling and the birds nails are supposed to not grow long and they are supposed to "look" healthier. Another thing is they said that it is supposed to help with screamers. Well my fids beaks still peal their nails are out of control and they won't let me touch them and my conures still scream. Not the normal morning and evening calls but they just start screaming some times for no reason. They have been on the Harrison's High Potency Coarse for a year. Do I just need to wait longer or are the effects supposed to already have happened?

Lisa,
I get mine from a veterinary clinic in Oakville. Harrison's isn't sold in stores, and the only place I've found it is at this clinic. I live in Toronto so it's about an hour drive for me, but it's well worth it. After I started feeding my birds Harrison's I totally noticed a difference in their appearance! Their feathers are a lot brighter and they look a lot healthier
