| pellets for Alita |
|
|
I took Alita my parrotlet to the avian vet yesterday. It was so nice to have a doctor who knew what kind of bird she was! When i got her wings clipped, the doctor here didn't have a clue.
so i found out she's a healtyh happy bird, who still doesn't like me becausei had to get her into her travel cage! she HATED it!!! but the doctor suggested i start her on pellets. I've read TONS about them especially here, but i didn't know if they're good for parrotlets. The doctor gave me two trial bags, so i put part of them in her seeds today. I'm hoping she'll take to them. I'm thinking i'll just increase the percentage of pellets in her seeds each day. Is that a good plan? I've read a few different ways to introduce them. But i figured i just moved her into a new cage, and into my room, so maybe it's a good time to try new food, too. (That's what I've heard)
Any suggestions?

You know, that's how some people told me to convert my birds to a pellet diet, but it didn't work well for me.
Here's a link to the type of conversion diet I used when converting my senegal.
http://birdieboutique.com/switch.html
It took about 3 weeks before she was eating her pellets consistantly, if I remember correctly.
That page says to use Roudybush pellets, but your brand can be used.
Whatever method you choose, be sure to keep the bowl of pellets always available, & at the highest feeding station, as that's where birds feel most comfortable eating. And keep a close watch on her weight throughout the process!
OMG I'm glad you found an avian vet that knew what kind of bird she is!
I'll be anxious to hear how it goes Good luck! |

hi again
after i posted the first time above, i gave Alita a couple pellets from my fingers. Shd took right to them and ate them all! i put a dish with some pellets in it for her, and put it at the top of the cage (above her seed dish). i caught her sneaking them a few minutes after i put them in! i am happy she likes them, but i hope she keeps eating them i'll just pretend to eat them in front of her. she will eat ANYTHING i eat. (well, she would if i let her!)

That's great to hear Katya!
Some birds will take right to pellets with no problem at all. My senegal took to them really well too, tho she did prefer her seeds if they were both offered. |

So did my little budgie, he will always prefer seeds if he has them
Great to hear she was easy to convert over to pellets Congratulations |

Katya! I am amazed, because those little birdies can give us more worries than big birdies when it comes to putting them on other diets. But Alita just seems to eat the pellets like she done this for years?!
Which pellets do you have? |

i spoke too soon! now alita is ignoring the pellets. i know she'll eat them because i saw her go after them...maybe it's because i still have seeds in the cage? i don't want to starve her though if she's not eating them!
i am using a trial of the harrison's pellets. i think i'll get a small bag of them and keep trying, because i think she'll eventually eat them. frustrating to know what to do now, though, since i know she'll eat them!

Yikes, perhaps it's my bad vibes!
Harrison pellets are very good! I'm really happy with them. I would keep them closed in the fridge.
Perhaps you can get her seeds out of her cage for some hours? You will have to clean her cage first, making sure you get rid of all the seeds.
Good luck..
PS Perhaps she wants to snack them together with you? |
