| Season of Nuts |
|
|
Not sure if this applies to countries other than Singapore but I'm delighted!
Finally the season has arrived for me to be able to procure nuts in shells for my flock.
5 types of nuts are available at the local supermarket in Singapore:
Walnuts, almonds, pecan, brazil nuts, filbert
Baby will be thrilled!
I'm going to stock up a year's supply in my freezer and give a few sparingly over the entire year.
$5 sing dollars for a pack (240g/12 oz)
here are 2 photos to share with all:

Ah! I bet that will make Baby very happy
I was able to find some recently too. We found 5 pound bags of mixed walnut, brazil nut, hazelnut, almond & pecan in shells.
I didn't realize they could be frozen! I should stock up too, while I can, becuz they are extra special treats for Manu, he LOVES them & he should be able to have them available year round. |

Really? you can only get nuts in shells during certain time of the year?!?! wow, I didn't realise that. I can go into a market and get all kinds of shelled nuts... I get almond, walnut, brazil nut all the time for Apollo. Apollo isn't a fan of anything round and small and hard to crack!! lol.. I've got a lazy boy here. hehe.. he's favourite will always be almond. I get macadamia from my mother in law when it's in season, though I don't give it apollo with the shell, coz it's just about impossible for him to crack!! LOL... |

indeed...almonds are loved by almost all birds!
their shells are softer so other large and even medium sized birds such as conures can slowly crack them to get at the meat. |

yeah it's very very popular for lazy bird like my Apollo!! LOL... that's the only nut he'll crack by himself.. all other nuts I'll have to 'pre-crack' for him with a nut cracker or he just fling them around like toys!!! hehehe |

I gave little Jennie the sennie an almond in the shell the other day, & it took her for EVER, but she was finally able to get it open
It don't take Manu anything at all to crack any of shells, as I imagine is the case with Baby.
Yeah, here in the US, I haven't been able to find nuts in the shells in stores except close to the winter holidays. |

Everybody loves Amounds in the shells, some of the smaller ones you have to start a crack for them. But the larger birds tear right into them. Of course the Macaws love the Walnuts as well, But the Amazons have to have a start. They are so spolied that when I go in the bird room and say "time for Bed" Amy (RLA) goes into her cage by her self and waits for a walnut...We get nuts year round at a heath food store called "Trader Joes".

ya know, I went to this bird store near me a few days ago just for a visit, and for the first time I see a sign that says 'macaw nut mix', and it's just full of shelled nuts... what makes me wonder is why they call it macaw nut mix when there are hardly any macaws here as pets.. or as anything really since they are so very expensive here (cheapest being blue and gold and they sell for around $7000AUD)! I would have thought it might be better business for the bird shop to call them 'cockatoo nut mix' since thats what the people by them for... their cockatoos!! lol... go figure.. |

Maybe they are thinking that the name "Macaw Nut Mix" will make them seem more expense nut mix to give your Too's. There is no telling with retail people... |

I've been looking for nuts in the grocery stores for about 2 months. FINALLY, the nuts have arrived. I have only given my sennie almonds so far. He loves them. It takes him at leat 1/2 hour to eat a nut. Its like a toy and treat in one! |

I don't think the name made a different to be honest, it isn't too expensive at all. Can't remember the cost, but it's pretty reasonable!!
On a side note, I finally found a supplier that will have a steady supply of pecan nuts through the year and Apollo loves them! I tried it out the other day.. though I still have to crack it a little for him or he won't be able to crack the nut as it is too slippery for him.. hehe... so I'll be getting a few more this weekend for him. Lucky bird, he gets better food than me... |

Yes, I have came to the same conclusion. We have a big upright frezer, 90% is bird food. And even the food we eat is shared with them, spoiled brats aren't they...

My Dad just came back from the middle east and he brought a suitcase full of fresh Pistachios! Have you guys ever had fresh nuts (not dried)? I've never seen them here in Canada, but I remember when I used to live in Iran we always had fresh pistachios and walnuts! Soooo yummy! Bunny is just ecstatic over the pistachios! I peel the skin off for her, and then she gets the nut out of the shell. This is what they look like with the skin, incase you haven't seen them fresh:
