ok so my new lovebird (which might get here by next weekend!) is currently on a higgins brand seed and pellet mix with millet spray as a side. none of my local petshops carry higgins so I am going to switch it to roudybush(which the new one carries ) and attempt to get it to eat fresh foods. my question is how best to do that and what fresh foods are easy to switch birds onto. and if anyone knows a good website about sprouted seeds and how to properly prepare them that would be appreciated too! thanks so much! |

Birds can be funny things, and each is attracted to different stuff, you'll have to find out your lovie's quirks for yourself!
My best bet on getting him/her onto fresh foods is to let him/her see you eating (and enjoying "mmm this is good!") and then offer him/her a piece to try (oh yes, no eye contact while you're eating, keep your attention on the food, this will get your lovie even more interested in what you're eating). If s/he shies away, don't press him/her, just take another nibble, and try offering it again |

Oh I forgot to mention, you don't have to take a bite out of the food you want your lovie to try, I've tricked my budgie a few times by pretending to take a little nibble and then just offering the food, hehe. |

Each bird is different... some are naturally more finicky from a young age than others, so you will just have to experiment with what it might like. Just like kids, they don't all like broccoli or squash, etc. Most birds will like corn. It's not as nutritious as some other vegetables, so they need more than that, but I've never seen a bird that didn't like corn once they try it. Also it seems like most birds like carrots. Also, give it time if it doesn't go for vegetables right away. Eat some in front of it to show that the food is okay. Sometimes they are just extra stubborn, and you might waste a lot of food before it decides to eat any. Hopefully you will be lucky! It would help if the breeder has weaned it onto vegetables already. Here is directions for sprouted seed: http://community.webshots.com/album/43562265ONBfPP |

thanks all! I will definately try as hard as I can, to get him on his veggies, and fruit. It will probably be easy to switch him to sprouted seeds. I thought it would be a little harder to prepare them... but I guess not |

If you are going to go fresh, I'd say limit the fruit... you can find the same nutrients (plus a lot more) in vegetables. Fruit is a lot of sugar and water, but nice for a healthy treat. |
