well, THAT was painless!  Reply with quote

We don't have much in the way of pet stores here, (strange, seeing as I live in the city Confused ) so I've been limited to a seed, fruit, small pellets and nut diet for medium and large parrots, with lots of fresh fruits and veggies. Well, of course Merlin has been indulging on the seeds and nuts and dried fruits (Uh oH!) Well, today we went to another part of town and I FINALLY found some pellets! They are Tropican Lifetime Parrot sticks and are sold as a complete balanced diet for small parrots. I know there are better types of pellets out there, but I can't buy anything better than this in our area and I can't order from away either so I went with the best we can get.

Well, after his last try with pellets when my mom had him I thought it would be a HUGE fight to get him to try them... NOPE. I simply took away his seeds and nuts and replaced the dish with the pellets and he could NOT resist having a go at them! He LOOOVES them. I tried them myself and they taste like kinda like dried banana without all the sugar. Yummy! They can be fed dry or wet and store up to a week in the fridge after they have been soaked so he will still have a variety of textures and of course his fresh veggies and fruits. Seeds and nuts will now be an occasional treat for this little birdie!

Good job once again!
I've just never had any problem with any of my fids eating pellets either, or eating anything for that matter Razz

Oh, I wouldn't say we've NEVER had a problem with Merlin! We've tried pellets several times over the years and he wouldn't go near them! They even smelled like the new ones do! But for some reason he just took to them today... Maybe because he watched me open the bag and try one, then I offered it to him. He must have thought he was one lucky boy to be getting some of "Moms new treats" LOL Not that we didn't try that before Rolling Eyes

Anyway, the new "pellets" are bigger and he can grab them with his foot and much away, so maybe that makes the difference. The old pellets were about 2mm wide and were thin but hard, so maybe he didn't like having to stay over his bowl to eat them. I know he likes the sound the new ones make when the little bits fall onto the newspaper below him, he looks so happy munching away with his little head cocked so he can hear the little "tink tink" noise below him as he drops crumbs. Silly bird!

Good job there girl for finding the pellet for your little guy.. I'm sure Merlin just love you for it. Very Happy Any chance of photo of him eating his with his little foot holding the pellets? I love seeing birds using the feet to hold things to eat or play..Smile I find that they are just sooooo coordinated standing on one foot!!! Smile

well, we are a week into the pellet routine. I soak them in juice sometimes, but he doesn't seem to like it as much so I'm going to stop wasting them LOL He loves them crunchy though and eats quit e a bit of them. He doesn't waste any, because anything he drops he climbs to the floor later to get! Laughing I haven't been giving him any other treats this week, I wanted him to be eating the pellets well before he got it into his head that he could just wait till treat time and fill up then and not have to eat the pellets. I will start giving him other foods again tomorrow, as I am content that he loves his pellets enough to eat them OVER fresh foods... I might have to take the pellets away to get him to eat anything else!

Uh oh, gotta go, he is now climbing down from his cage to go "talk" to the cat. Stupid bird Confused She likes to watch him, and wants to touch him with her paw but is very gentle. I don't let her get close to him at all though! And they are NEVER alone together of course. She can be sound asleep and he will be on the bottom rung just SCREAMING at her because hw ants her to come over and umm..."Play"? I don't know... I think he wants to eat her! Shocked

Jennie often tries to "get" my cats & my dog too! When they leisurely walk underneath the open door of her cage, she rushes to the bottom edge of it & hangs upside down trying to get them! I always have to "shoo" them to rush them past her!

Very good job with the pellets! Our avian vet has always recommended a diet of 70 to 80% pellets & 80% of the remaining 20% should be veggies, the rest other fresh foods & treats. So even if he doesn't eat his veggies & other food as well as he used to, I think you can rest assured as long as he's eating his pellets well & still eats a little bit of veggies & other foods.
